realm

Realm has released the Android version of its mobile database solution for developers, which soft-launched on iOS over the summer. The open-source library bucks the trend of cloud-based databases by storing information on your device. Since launching on iOS, Realm has attracted 20,000 developers to its product in just a short few weeks. Apps like Cloth and Breeze have already shipped with Realm inside. The team began development in 2011 and graduated from the Summer ’11 Y Combinator class. Realm claims that its solution reduces the development time of an app by as much as half. Once deployed, the code…

Meeting

Andrej Kiska is an associate at Credo Ventures. Dealing almost exclusively with first time startup founders, we tackle the following question with nearly all of our CEOs: How much equity should they give to the employees? During the first conversation with a given founder about employee equity, it is not uncommon for the CEO to fire back with the following question: Why would I give any equity to my employees? In one instance, I told a CEO that we typically recommend a 15 percent stock options pool at seed/Series A stage. She rolled her eyes in disbelief. When I try to illustrate that this…

Google Apps for Education just got a little bit sweeter: In the coming weeks, new and existing customers will have access to Drive for Education, an academic version of its online storage solution. Drive for Education follows Drive for Work and boasts unlimited storage, support for individual files up to 5TB in size and automatic encryption. “Every file uploaded to Google Drive is encrypted, not only from your device to Google and in transit between Google data centers, but also at rest on Google servers,” Ben Schrom, PM Google Apps for Education said. The service will be bolstered with Google Apps Vault, a…

LinkedIn has been evolving as a publishing platform in recent years, so when it weighed in with an offer to acquire Pulse last year, this merely served to confirm its intentions to move far beyond that of being a simple social network for business. Pulse was always a fantastic news aggregation service, taking your favorite news feeds and websites and transforming them into an interactive mosaic. A little like Flipboard. Now, LinkedIn is…

The team behind Ghost, a non-profit and open source blogging platform, is introducing new plans and pricing for its Ghost(Pro) hosting service. The bad news is that the company’s plans are more expensive than before. In the past, a “Mini” plan was available for $5 per month and offered one blog, with unlimited storage and up to 10,000 views. The “Small” plan pitched five blogs with 50,000 views for $14 per month, while the top-end “Medium” plan rewarded you with 15 blogs and 150,000 views for $36 per month. The new pricing plans are as follows: Personal: $10 per month, one…
