"The network news shows dedicated twenty times more coverage to Tiger Woods' affairs than they did to the Climategate scandal. They figure now that the cat is out of the bag, it's less interesting to nail cagey lying scientists with punchlines than it is to cage the big cat lying down with his club and females. The big bro.ad.cast media can't see the climate change forrest for the Woods." ~ Laughzilla

Facebook has responded to critical feedback about its user experiments by announcing new policies that include clearer guidelines, a panel for reviewing proposed research and new training for employees. Back in June, Facebook faced a backlash from users after researchers published a paper detailing emotional experiments the company had conducted on its users. In the study, Facebook tweaked its News Feed algorithm to show some users more negative posts in order to see how they would react. Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg later apologized for the company’s poor communication regarding the project. In a news release today, Facebook CTO Mike Schroepfer detailed…

If you’re an urban straphanger, you’ve likely devised a scheme to deflect the barrage of advertising messages that besiege you at every turn. Just make like a zombie and zone out. But Re+Public, a coalition of artists and public space advocates, thinks there’s better commuting through augmented reality. The group has been beta testing its NO AD app for iOS and Android, which acts to replace 100 of the New York City subway’s most common ads with curated digital art that you can view through your mobile device. Beginning in mid-October, the app will display images from the International Center of Photography. Instead of tuning out that underground material world,…

Flipboard for Windows Phone 8 is finally here

At last, Flipboard has an app for Windows Phone 8. Nokia said a version of the magazine-inspired reading app would come to its platform over a year ago, and users have been waiting patiently ever since. Now, it’s finally here. (Well, for devices with at least 1GB of RAM anyway.) The app will likely be met with a tempered reception though. A version was released in the Windows Phone Store by mistake last week, and without its most iconic “flipping” feature. The company later clarified that it was an incomplete build designed as a placeholder before the official release. Nevertheless,…

Facebook’s ‘Like’ button has become a rather ubiquitous part of browsing the Web, serving as a general indicator of interest in an item or an easy way to share articles with your friend. Now, Facebook has made their Like Button available to all Android and iOS developers so they can embed the tool right into their mobile apps. Basically, developers now have the tools to let you Like items from within any native app, rather than needing to go through the Web. So if you’re reading a Flipboard article on your tablet, for instance, developers can now let you show your…
