Twitter for Mac gets long-overdue update adding multi-photo viewing and DM photos

Twitter for Mac has received a rare update that adds months-old features, such as support for viewing and posting multiple photos in a single tweet and attaching pictures to a direct message, to the app. It’s not much of an overstatement to call the Twitter for Mac app neglected. It’s missing loads of features that have come to the Web and mobile app versions of the service. Don’t tell Dick, but that’s actually one of the reasons I use it, as I prefer the traditional text-only reverse timeline view to the newfangled (mandatory) photo preview and re-ordered conversation interface on the…

If you’re reading this, there’s a good chance you’re tethered to your smartphone more often than you’d perhaps like. If that’s the case, then Offtime for Android could be worth a look. Offtime helps you switch off and tune out, while still letting you access the important stuff, such as calls from your other half, or texts from important clients. Offtime can also follow set rules, for example 4 missed calls in quick succession from someone you know could hint at urgent matters. A word of warning though – Offtime does require a lot of access permissions to track your…

Google publishes its ‘Physical Web’ open standard for using URLs as beacons for smart devices

Google Opens New Berlin Office

Google has unveiled the code for its open source Physical Web standard, an attempt to provide an easier way to communicate with public connected devices like vending machines, posters and bus stops. The Internet of Things is making objects around us smarter, but we don’t have a standard way of interacting with them. Many devices require you to download a custom mobile app, but that’s overkill if it’s just for a one-time use. The Chrome-sponsored Physical Web project wants to use URLs to lower the barrier for “tiny use cases.” Google’s examples include: A bus stop tells you the next…

Google gives its Play Newsstand app for Android a Material Design makeover

Google today updated version its Play Newsstand app for Android with a Material Design makeover. It follows the Play Newsstand app for iOS, which Google released less than 10 days ago as a successor to Google Currents. If you’ve tried Play Newsstand for iOS, or at least looked at the screenshots, you’ll have a good idea of what to expect. The design is flatter than before, with larger images and playful animations. Scrolling up and down reveals a smooth stream of article cards with interesting photos, in addition to smaller rows of square icons for specific publications. Tapping any one of…
