Back in September, Netflix revealed via the Ubuntu Developers Forum that the video-on-demand service would finally be available on Linux, via the latest stable Chrome build. Canonical has revealed that Ubuntu fully supports Netflix via the official Chrome 37 release, with no hacks, twiddles or workarounds required. ➤ Watch Netflix in Ubuntu today [Ubuntu] Thumbnail image credit – Ryan Anson/AFP/Getty Images

Uber slashes prices in Berlin to comply with regulations

Rather than charging the equivalent of $2 per kilometer, the company is now charging $0.44 – basically the cost of running the car on its lower-cost UberPop service. This is because German legislation allows fares of this level as they equate to ‘ride-sharing’, as there’s no profit generated from the transaction. This is…

Tesco drops the price of its original Hudl tablet to £79

Just a day after Tesco opened sales for its new super-duper budget tablet, the Hudl2, the British supermarket giant has dropped the price on its Hudl predecessor to a very appealing £79. Though this equates to a £40 drop on the original price, Tesco had actually already lowered it to £99 a couple of months back. Still a tablet of the Hudl’s quality for £79 is a great deal, and it’s a whole £50 less than the Hudl2. ➤ Hudl | Tesco [via Pocket Lint]

meerkat

It’s not news that the UK has been looking at the ways in which ‘white space’ technology – gaps in spectrum between existing radio bands – can be used to ease the strain on mobile and M2M (machine-to-machine) data overheads, but Ofcom has today revealed that the UK could be the first country in Europe to roll out the technology more widely, starting next year. Trials to test the suitability of white space for certain uses have been under way for some time already but the most recent has seen Ofcom team up with ZSL London Zoo to live stream…

Facial recognition technology can be used for many ends, including tagging people in photos and ID-ing criminals. But what about detecting how funny you find a joke? Designed to combat dwindling ticket sales, a Barcelona comedy club is trialling a new pay-per-laugh scheme that tracks your facial expressions to establish how hilarious you find the on-stage shenanigans. Each seat has a tablet attached to the back of it, which analyses your eyes and mouth for the merest suggestion of mirth. As the BBC reports, for every laugh induced, you’ll pay €0.30 (about $0.40), though you’ll never pay more than €24…
