Quotable

"House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Rep. Charles Rangel, D-N.Y., announced his temporary resignation as committee chairman, March 3, 2010, on Capitol Hill, due to charges that he violated ethics and was corrupt. It probably did not help that he was made chairman of the committee for his promise to end the "culture of corruption" in Washington, DC." ~ Yasha Harari

Tying in with the new coding and computing content initiative announced by the BBC last month, the British broadcaster has announced a new Doctor Who-themed game designed to teach the basics of programming to kids. Available online in the UK from Wednesday 22 October, ‘The Doctor and the Dalek’ game is aimed at CBBC-age viewers, and is voiced by the good Doctor himself, Peter Capaldi. Players guide The Doctor on a perilous pursuit through space, as he teams up with a Dalek he rescued to save all of creation. Though the game is aimed at kids, the adventure also delves into the Sontar homeworld and the…

‘Head of getting moonshots ready for contact with the real world‘ isn’t the simplest job title you’ll ever see, but that’s exactly what Obi Felten at Google[X] gets to call herself. In more comprehensible terms, Felten is a director of product management for early stage Google projects, working alongside engineers, scientists and everyone else to help turn “science fiction-like technology into real world products and businesses.” Such projects include smart contact lens, airborne delivery systems and the much talked-about driverless car, in case you were wondering. Felten was at Wired’s annual conference in London last week, where she was on-stage…

Surprise Ride
As child refugees from Lebanon, Donna and Rosy Khalife knew how to get creative. Growing up in Canada, then Massachusetts, their dad taught the sisters how to engrave plastic, recycle metal and create art using global stamps and coins. That sense of inspiration through organic play became the value proposition for Surprise Ride, a monthly subscription service which offers thematic play for kids ages 6 to 11. Thanks to an appearance on Shark Tank last year, the Washington, D.C.-based startup has smashed yearly targets and will launch an e-commerce site next month. In less than two years, Surprise Ride has grown from…

Big screens are finally in fashion — well, for Apple at least — after what seems like eons of rumors, leaks and predictions from the media of Apple’s shift into larger phones. As we waved goodbye to the comfortable, smaller form factor of the iPhone 5 that we’ve become accustomed to, Apple is switching gears to selling ‘bigger is better.’ This year’s iPhone, like those before it, comes with a number of improvements that add up to making it the most compelling device on the market, however this year you have the choice of screen size added to the mix. Luckily,…
