Uber Privacy
Uber has announced that it is resuming its cab service in the Indian capital of New Delhi, where it was banned last month when an Uber driver allegedly raped a passenger. The company said in a blog post that it has applied for a license under the Radio Taxi Scheme in India so as to comply with local authorities’ regulations for such services. In addition, Uber says it is continuing its work with government transport agencies to introduce new rules for on-demand transporation technology aggregators like itself. As it resumes operation in New Delhi, Uber says that it is only…

Shortly after launching its Internet.org Android app in Colombia this month, Facebook is now bringing the app to mobile users in Ghana. Airtel customers in the country will be able to use Internet.org to access a set of websites and online services covering education, news, maternal health, sports and local information. Among the included services are AccuWeather, BBC News, Jobberman, News24, SuperSport, Wattpad, Wikipedia, and of course, Facebook. ➤ Internet.org App Available in Ghana [Facebook Newsroom]

Skeuomorphism vs. flat design: It’s an ongoing conversation

The popular debate that made skeuomorphism a household word among a certain class of people started around the release of iOS 7, when the iPhone interface switched from a rich, metaphorical design with iconic references to analog objects to a flat design aesthetic. The civilian dinner table conversation (as opposed to the desktop, video chat and office discourse — which, no doubt, raged for far longer and in more technical depth) centered around the difference between what was commonly viewed as Steve Jobs’ vision — user interfaces referencing familiar objects that people understand and that are drawn in a detailed, often realistic way, and the…

Artist Tony Ruth channels children’s book author Richard Scarry for a spot-on view of Silicon Valley

Richard Scarry is a beloved author of children’s books. I had roughly, all of his books as a kid. His most famous series of books involved Busytown, a town populated with animal citizens. It was quaint and beautiful. Silicon Valley and the egos that permeate it are neither of those things. Artist Tony Ruth decided to illustrate the patent trolls, digital prophets and cryptocurrency experts in the land of zeros, ones and over-inflated egos in the style of Scarry’s Busytown. The result is hilarious and slightly depressing. Check out the rest of Ruth’s Business Town. It’s “what value-creating winners do all day.” ➤ Business Town
