Twitter is rolling out swipe to dismiss images

Twitter appears to be rolling out a big change to how you get get out of viewing images on the service once you’re done. Previously, to dismiss an image you’d make a single tap on the image. For many users today, it’s changed to be a simple swipe up or down to return to their Twitter feed. This feature rolled out for me today and I spent a good few minutes confused about why tapping an image wasn’t getting rid of it. After a few confusing moments it becomes natural to swipe away, though. Third-party app Tweetbot has had a similar swipe-to-dismiss…

Remember six months ago when you couldn’t scroll through Facebook without seeing Bitstrips avatars of your friends in not quite funny comics? Today, Bitstrips updated its iOS and Android avatar app to support photos. Now you can put your avatar in any photograph or piece of art. No longer will you be constrained by the available scenes in the app; place your cartoon doppelganger in any situation. Put them in space. Put them under the sea. Put them next to celebratory fire. The possibilities are limited only by your imagination and the available poses and facial expressions found in the app. Oddly, the updated app…

Though Microsoft’s Office remains dominant in the workplace, the cloud version of its productivity suite isn’t as popular as Google Docs. The Office team today introduced a long list of updates to improve your experience with the software on the Web. Thankfully, they’ve provided us with short YouTube videos to show off the features. First up, the minimal ‘Reading View‘ mode has been updated to make Edit, Print, Share and Comments commands easier to find. Printing has been made easier too, as you can now print PDFs directly from Word Online without having to first download the file. Office is also introducing several new…

Twitter acquires Niche, a service that connects brands to internet celebrities

Twitter
Twitter today announced it’s acquiring Niche, a startup that provides monetization strategies and software to the community on Twitter and Vine. You might be wondering what exactly these monetization strategies are; Niche connects influential people on Vine and Twitter with brands to create sponsored content for sharing on their own channels. Think of it as a talent agency for social media ‘celebrities.’ Niche also offers “cross-platform analytics” but it’s not clear exactly what it tracks. Twitter’s example in the blog post is a series of sponsored pieces from Vine celebrities featuring the HP Pavilion x360. If you wanted proof that Twitter’s serious about getting…

Skype’s Qik messenger, a tiny app for sending quick video messages, today received an update that lets you easily share your videos outside the app. The update adds a new share menu that lets you use the phone’s built-in share screen to send your videos to whatever service you want, without needing to save them to your phone. Qik’s sharing update is only available for iPhone and Android users at this time, but will eventually make its way to Windows Phone too. ➤ Qik [iOS / Android]
