Microsoft’s note-taking app is becoming better, if you’re a free user. Nearly a year ago, Microsoft made OneNote 2013 free for Mac and Windows, but on Windows certain features were only available on the full app included with the Office Suite. These are now enabled for everyone – there is no longer a functional difference between the paid and free edition of OneNote. This means all OneNote 2013 users will be able to: Add password protection to specific sections of your documents View prior versions of a page via Page History Take notes while recording audio or video Search for specific words in…

At the White House Summit on Cybersecurity and Consumer Protection, Apple CEO Tim Cook took the stage and talked about how Apple and other companies need to get security right. Judging from the recent hacks, he’s right. But he also took a moment to drop some Apple Pay news. Beginning in September, you will be able to use Apple Pay for government transactions. Just that much easier to give the government your money without busting out your wallet. So coming this fall, you might be able to pay for your entrance to Yellowstone National Park with your iPhone without worrying about your credit…

Google today announced it is shutting down its Helpouts support community on April 20, 2015. Helpouts launched in 2013 as a way for users to get expert advice and solutions for a variety of problems using live video feeds. Experts set their own price, and were paid through Google Wallet (Google took a 20 percent cut). While Google says the community “includes some engaged and loyal contributors,” it simply didn’t grow at the pace the company expected in order to viably support it. Once the service shuts down in April, you’ll be able to download your Helpouts history using Google Takeout…

Facebook is constantly testing small design changes on its platform, and today some Android users are getting a taste of Lollipop’s Material Design UI. Android Police first reported on the changes, and as tends to be the case with Facebook, only some users are seeing the change so far. I noticed Material Design’s Floating action button on the bottom right corner of the app without needing an update, but a coworker had no such change.
