Microsoft enhances security and gestures on Outlook for iOS and Android

Although it first introduced Outlook for iOS and Android just two weeks ago, Microsoft is already adding some security and interface enhancements to the mobile apps. First up, administrators can now require a PIN lock using Exchange ActiveSync. This affects companies with email policies that require devices to have passwords before the can sync mail – Outlook will now enforce this at the device level. On Apple devices the encryption uses iOS 8’s built-in security feature once the password feature is enabled. On Android, Outlook enforces screen lock rules, and provide a walkthrough to enable the degree of security needed for your company.…

Amazon Prime 1-hour delivery service is now live in Manhattan

prime now
Amazon first introduced one-hour delivery for a small area of Manhattan in December. Now the company is expanding the service to the entire island. Running the zip-code checker on Amazon’s Prime Now page, service is available in all Manhattan zip codes – it was initially only available in the 10001 area. Manhattan covers 41 zip codes. Though the website says 1-hour delivery is available in “most” Manhattan zip codes (with the oh-so-slow two-hour delivery available elsewhere), Mashable has received confirmation from Amazon it should cover the entire island. Of course, you still need to be an Amazon Prime member to take advantage of the feature. As…

Twitter is super keen on being more than just a place for your random thoughts on current events. In addition to its Mo Pub ad platform, it’s also going after developers with its Crashlytics service. Today it announced that the Answers mobile analytics service within Crashlytics is being launched as its own tool in addition to being art of the Crashlytics dashboard and that the service is currently handing five billion sessions a day in real time. Currently Twitter takes these app sessions and presents them in the Crashlytics dashboard to inform developers on what’s working, and what’s not working (i.e. crashes) in their apps. That’s…

Apple might be working on a VR headset for iPhone, even though Tim Cook doesn’t like them

A new patent granted to Apple today indicates that the company might just be getting into Google Glass territory after all. The patent details a “head-mounted display system” that allows the wearer to operate a ‘handheld portable electronic device with a separate head-mounted device.” Legal mumbo-jumbo aside, it seems increasingly likely that Apple is working on a virtual reality headset. Today’s patent filing reveals that such a product would be an iPhone accessory and would likely mount the iPhone for the experience like Samsung’s Gear VR already does. It also details a number of accessories, such as swappable batteries and a…

Today, Facebook announced a new type of ad coming to the social network: product advertisements. The idea behind these new product ads is companies can upload their entire product catalog and create ad campaigns that target specific types of people, or even let Facebook automatically show ads for the right products to the right people. For example, a company can now automatically target a person who has previously visited their website or opened their app. Testing with companies showed a 20% increase in conversion, according to Kristi Argyilan, Senior Vice President at Target. The new ad type is available today via…
