"Scientists have discovered that 'Thinking outside the box might be facilitated by having a somewhat less intact box', which begs the question, why are people always thinking in or around boxes? Maybe it's time we think relative to other things ... like oceans, fields, galaxies, mountains and muppets." ~ Yasha Harari

Developers often struggle with quickly discovering problems in large native code bases and figuring out how to fix them, particularly when developing for Android. Facebook might have a solution. Today, the company announced a new tool for debugging Android code called Stetho. Developers can use Stetho to get access to data about what’s going on in their Android apps using the familiar Chrome Developers interface that many Web developers are familiar with. The company says that Stetho requires very little setup for developers to get started, and they can then jump into Chrome’s ‘inspect’ window to begin searching for bugs. It’s early…

Adwords
Google today launched a dedicated app for its AdWords advertising platform on Android… but only in Canada. The app is extensively featured for a first version. You can view campaign states, update bids and budgets, get alerts and notifications, receive improvement suggestions or call a Google expert for advice. The app only works for existing AdWords customers; you can’t sign up for the platform through it. The rest of the world is will follow “soon,” but if you’re in Canada, you can download the app from the Play Store now. Note that AdWords is different from the lighter AdWords Express…

Samsung gets serious about mobile payments by purchasing LoopPay

Samsung_2014
Today, Samsung has announced that it’s acquiring LoopPay, a mobile wallet provider that allows wireless payments to take place on existing magnetic stripe readers. The announcement didn’t disclose the sale price, but said that LoopPay’s founders will join Samsung’s mobile division to push forward the “next wave of innovation in the digital smart wallet.” Samsung had previously partnered with LoopPay but says the acquisition will help take it to the “next level” and would mean its solution is more widely accepted than competing services due to the technology working with existing point-of-sale products. LoopPay touts 10 million merchants using its platform…

This whiteboard clock will make you wish you had one too

You’ll never be jealous of anyone’s clock until you see this one that actually writes out the current time on a whiteboard. The clock was developed by Maurice Bos and uses a 3D-printed arm to grip the pen and magnets to keep it stuck on the whiteboard. The clock even automatically wipes off its previous writing, before writing out the current time. It’s powered by a tiny microcontroller that gets the latest time from a modem attached to a computer and runs the clock itself. You can read the amazing details of how the clock was built and maybe even get inspired to build one…

Why are roaming fees still a thing? (Or, why I love the Kroes women)

roaming cell towers
Pep Rosenfeld is co-founder of comedy theater Boom Chicago and Boom Chicago Creative in Amsterdam. He loves both nerd chic and chic nerds, and can be seen hosting events where they meet — like #TNW2015. A recent piece in The Washington Post’s tech blog, The Switch, reminded me of my two favorite Dutch people: the Kroes women, Doutzen and Neelie. Doutzen is an international supermodel, and Neelie is an international super-negotiator who loves competition and startups… and seems to hate telecoms. The article discusses how Google is thinking about becoming a wireless provider. It talked about Google bringing super-fast internet (by any standard, not just by sickly…
