"Assad, Gaddafi and Sallah are rebuking the lesson learned by Ben-Ali, Mubarak and Gbagbo. And that lesson is, you can't crush your own people and at the same time be a puppet of the U.S., but you can crush your people if you play along with Obama's half-baked foreign policy." ~ Yasha Harari

Among the myriad announcements that Facebook crammed into its hour-long F8 Developer Conference keynote was an update on its video ad monetization scheme. The company announced that LiveRail, its ad tech platform for publishers’ video, will soon support display ads in mobile apps alongside video. The plan was mentioned briefly in the keynote, and augmented in a blog post by LiveRail engineer Mark Edwards. “LiveRail will power native ad formats as well as standard display placements like interstitials and banners. The Audience Network, with its high performing native ad format and access to 2 million Facebook advertisers, is tightly integrated into this platform,”…

Crowdfunding platforms have helped launch many a product, but what happens to campaigns after they’re over? Kickstarter wants to keep you coming to its site with a new feature called Spotlight. Rather than remain a relic of a product’s pre-funded past, pages for successfully funded campaigns can now be converted into full-on product showcases. This includes a number of editing tools, allowing you to use a large featured background image, add direct buy links or show off a timeline of a product’s past and future. Of course, most successfully funded projects have dedicated homepages of their own, but a lot…

Beyond wearable tech: How Philips is pushing towards the future of connected health

philips
Health tech was a big theme at SXSW last week, and I met up with Liat Ben-Zur, Senior Vice-President and Digital Technology Leader at Philips, to find out about how the longstanding tech giant is approaching the digital health revolution. Given its broad reach across consumer and business technology, Philips sees digital health as encompassing everything from connected services for doctors through to healthier consumer tech products. “What if your crockpot could manage the nutritional value of your dinner?,” as the company said in its SXSW PR pitch. To ‘join the dots’, the company has created a platform to share data across…

Airbnb has won a contract to provide 20,000 rooms to accommodate athletes and attendees at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. The company was chosen over two other accommodation services, Hotel Urbano and Alugue Temporada, which is a significant feat for the Silicon Valley based start-up. It is unknown how much the contract is worth but it is likely that Airbnb will become a sponsor and partner for the event as well. There is no history of  the public ever being asked for assistance with accommodation during the Games in the past so this is a notable decision. During the 2012…

facebook analytics for apps
At F8 Developer Conference today, Facebook unveils Analytics for Apps to provide insight on an app’s customer base, engagement, usage behavior and campaign performance to help developers maintain user retention. Facebook says with free-to-use Analytics for Apps, developers can understand how users are using the same apps cross-device. The tool will measure the app’s performance of across devices, and offer demographic data, such as age, gender and location. The tool will also offer metrics on segments, cohorts and funnels so developers can see how specific groups of people using which OS are responding to their app, especially during feature changes or updates. Lastly, Analytics for Apps…
