Quotable

"House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Rep. Charles Rangel, D-N.Y., announced his temporary resignation as committee chairman, March 3, 2010, on Capitol Hill, due to charges that he violated ethics and was corrupt. It probably did not help that he was made chairman of the committee for his promise to end the "culture of corruption" in Washington, DC." ~ Yasha Harari

Facebook finally has a phone and it’s already in your pocket

Remember all those attempts Facebook made at taking over your phone? There was the HTC First, Facebook Home and even Messenger Chat Heads. The company has always wanted to own a good chunk of your phone, but today, it’s finally making a play to take over phones by going after the one already in your pocket. This time, it might just work. With the Messenger platform, which was announced today, Facebook is deeply integrating apps into its chat service to add extra functions so you can do things like send GIFs from Giphy or order a cab. The company sees Messenger…

Here’s a video of a CD shattering at 170,600 FPS because why not

Back in January, the Slow Mo guys showed us what a DSLR’s mirror and shutter mechanism looked like at 10,000 fps. It was pretty awesome. Today’s video is much less educational, but just as cool, if not more so. The duo took a CD, spun it around at 23,000 rotations per minute, and then filmed it shattering at 170,600 frames per second. That’s a lot of frames. The camera recorded for just about 4 seconds, but watching the whole recording at a reasonable 24fps would take nearly 8 hours, amounting to 96GB of data. You can see just about every…

tempo for iOS
The likes of Hyperlapse and iPhone’s slo-mo feature have made video capture more fun than ever, but you don’t often have control over which part of the video can be sped up or slowed down. With Tempo, you can now choose to timelapse or slow down different portions of the same clip before uploading to your social channels. The iOS app works by importing a video from your Camera Roll, then allowing you to tap and find the selection of the video during which you want to change the speed. Tempo allows you to adjust to four different speeds: Fastest (x8),…

Facebook has officially declared it wants to own every single thing you do on the internet

1-platform-apps
At Facebook’s F8 conference today, it unveiled a number of big new changes to its service that transforms Messenger into a platform, expands Facebook Video even further and offers deeper integrations than ever for developers. The changes are actually really cool and great news for developers — Facebook is finally turning Messenger into the hub for everything, like LINE and WeChat already did in Asia — but they also signal something much larger. Facebook is declaring that it effectively wants to own every single thing you do on the internet. Let’s quickly go through the things that Facebook is making inroads into controlling: Social networking Messaging your…

Facebook sure is hitting video hard today at its F8 conference. After announcing support for spherical videos in the News Feed and an embeddable video player you can use anywhere, the company is also updating its Video API. There are some useful controls now available, such as the ability to restrict audience by age, gender or location, or being able set an expiration date for videos. Videos can also now be uploaded onto a page without it showing up in the News Feed, and admins gain new featured video and playlist management. Uploaders can also now add custom thumbnails for…
