Today, I saw the future and it is Periscope. The app, which only launched earlier today, had its first moment in the spotlight as an explosion rocked New York City. Within seconds, feeds started popping up on Periscope with first-person views of the scene. I watched it unfold from afar. Then I jumped into another stream, which was a block away. Then, another stream from right in front of the explosion. It’s unprecedented to get this kind of footage seconds after an event occurs, even before first responders arrived. As I watched the drama unfold in New York, streamers were…

With automated systems, self-driving cars, and robot helpers on the horizon, the way in which we interact with technology is going to undergo another massive shift. We might not have everyday access to these technologies now, but we will soon. But for that to happen and for these technologies to succeed, people have to want to use them. We’d have to fully accept them. To that end, advertising agency Dentsu, teamed up with the University of Tokyo’s Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology, Robo Garage, Toyota, and JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) to study ways of improving human-robot interaction. Their collaboration produced a talking companion to…

Facebook announced today that its React Native library is now available on Github. The library allows you to build native iOS and Android applications with JavaScript and Facebook’s React library. React Native compiles apps written in Javascript into native views, providing the platform-specific look and feel on iOS and Android devices that users are accustomed to. This isn’t a web wrapper like you might be accustomed to; it’s real, native code that’s as performant as a fully native app. Facebook already uses React Native to build some of its main apps: Facebook Groups, for example, uses React Native to render…

Facebook works with Internet.org to bring internet access to remote places and today announced that it’s building drones, satellites and lasers in Facebook’s Connectivity Lab to achieve that goal. Mark Zuckerberg announced the news on Facebook today, saying that the team is made up of leading experts in aerospace and communications technology from notable places like NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab and Ames Research center. There aren’t a huge amount of details available yet, but it hovers at around 60,000 feet delivering internet for up to “months” at a time. The drones have a wingspan that’s equivalent to that of a 737.…
