Facebook launches Messenger for the Web with a standalone browser version

messenger.com
Facebook is putting that Messenger.com domain to good use: The social network just launched a Messenger client on the Web that separates it from the Facebook.com homepage. With Messenger.com, Facebook is clearly gearing users up for its upcoming Messenger Business integration, in which users can chat directly with companies about product questions, purchase updates and shipment tracking. In our quick run-through, it doesn’t appear the third-party app integrations announced at F8 are available just yet. For example, if you want to share Giphy content straight from Web FB Messenger, you’ll have to resort to doing it the old-fashioned way: Copy and pasting a link, or uploading the…

Twitter kills the #Discover tab, replaces it with ‘Tailored Trends’ under the search page

Twitter today announced that it will now showcase trending topics under the search page on its mobile apps. You can see the update by clicking the search bar and seeing all the “Tailored Trends” along with a short description of each topic. To do so, Twitter is retiring the #Discover tab, meaning you’ll no longer see activities based on the people you follow. Instead, it will roll this into its trending recommendation algorithm based on who you follow and your particular location. The update arrives to iOS and Android versions of the Twitter app today. The feature will follow on the Web version…

iOS 8.3 update with racially diverse emoji is now officially available

Earlier today Apple seeded Yosemite 10.10.3 to OS X users, but folks with mobile devices haven’t been forgotten: the company just released iOS 8.3 as well. iOS 8.3’s most notable feature is arguably its expanded collection of racially diverse emoji. Any human-looking emoji can be changed by tapping and holding on the icon, and there are more than 300 new emoji. It also includes new languages for Siri, including Russian, Danish, Dutch, Thai, Swedish, Turkish and Portuguese. And as usual, there are a host of bug fixes and smaller tweaks as well, and Apple is claiming improved performance. Last month…

Woohoo! Google is bringing month view back to Calendar for Android

Apr08
by Sindy Cator on April 8, 2015 at 4:32 pm
Posted In: Around the Web, Google, Insider

Google Calendar for Android users will be happy to know that the company has decided to add month view back to the app after users requested (i.e. complained) for the feature’s return. In a Google+ post, the company announced some new updates that will arrive over the next couple of days, including event color codes and the option to switch views from navigation drawer. Frankly, we’re not sure why Google got rid of month views in the first place – with its launch of Android for Work apps, you’d think it was essential for teams to be able to see staff meetings and events on…

Yo ho! Yo ho! A startup life for me

Joining a startup is like joining a band of pirates. You become part of a crew, all working together to keep the ship afloat while sailing in search of treasure. You’re packed together with your shipmates, looking to the horizon, dreaming of fame, glory and riches. The right mix of adventure, uncertainty and reward (and the necessary amount of grog) help breed a unified team spirit. In most cases, the small-scale environments within startups allow for more ‘natural’ collaboration between team members. Less office politics and bureaucracy, more freedom and responsibility.
