MiniBrew_Prototype_v3
Each week we’re profiling one company that has been selected for Boost – our early-stage startup growth program. Catch up with these companies in person at The Next Web Conference Europe on April 23 & 24. The craft beer movement has exploded over the past decade. From independent brewers to big beer companies, everyone’s trying to get in on creating a unique ale that’s tailored to perfection. Homebrewing beer isn’t exactly easy, however. In most cases, it requires quite a bit of space, some care and attention, and a whole lot of patience. That’s a problem Netherlands-based Minibrew wants to tackle. The three-man team…

What would you do if you had $1,000 in extra income each month? Would you travel more? Buy that extra gadget? Take a more rewarding job? These days, almost anyone can create their own profitable online course. In the past few years, a new set of entrepreneurs have been earning a steady income from teaching on the side–on any topic you can imagine. And we’re not talking about some shady get-rich-quick scheme—thousands of everyday people are making a profit in their spare time, teaching what they know from marketing to watercolor painting. A few weeks ago, Amazon introduced Prime Stations – themed stations with unlimited skips that adapt to your preferences a-la Pandora – for iOS users. They were previously available on PC, Mac and Fire tablets, and now they’ve come to Android too. Prime subscribers can access these stations and listen to an unlimited amount of music; you can pause, skip or replay songs without trouble. The more you use a station and teach it what you like with a thumbs-up or thumbs down, the more it learns about your tastes. Amazon says there are hundreds of Prime Stations currently available,…

klingon duolingo
In loving memory of Leonard Nimoy who passed away earlier this year, it may be, ahem, logical to revisit old episodes of ‘Star Trek’ or brush up on your Klingon skills. tlhIngan Hol vIjatlhbe’ you say? Thankfully, Duolingo‘s here to help. The app known for gamifying the language-learning process has announced that it will now help users learn how to speak Klingon thanks to its Language Incubator program. The incubator crowdsources volunteers to help build support for new languages. Upcoming courses include Spanish for German speakers, English for Thai speakers, French for Chinese speakers, and so on. There are rumors of support for Dothraki and…

Facebook
Facebook gets a lot of attention for its privacy practices, and sometimes it even gets sued. (Somewhat) in its defence, any platform with just shy of 1.4 billion users is going to get a lot of attention whatever it does. For the most part, Facebook keeps mostly quiet, complies with the laws where it operates and carries on about its business. A position it refuted at the time. In a more measured response, the company has…
