Office Remote
Microsoft quietly launched a new Android app that lets you control Powerpoint presentations on your PC over Bluetooth. With the free app, dubbed Office Remote, you can control Powerpoint to advance through slides, play and pause embedded audio and video clips, switch to slide thumbnail view, check out speaker notes discreetly on your device and keep any eye on the presentation timer. Office Remote also works with Excel and Word, making it a neat tool to have if you frequently present spreadsheets and documents in front of an audience. With Excel, you can scroll, zoom and switch between worksheets, use…

Twitter is testing the ability to pin apps to brand profiles

Twitter
Twitter is testing yet another interesting new feature; some brands are now able to pin their apps directly to their Twitter profiles in its iPhone app. The change was spotted by a tipster on profiles of some verified business accounts including Periscope, Vine and Uber. It now prominently shows the company’s app, its rating on the App Store and a button to download or open it if it’s already installed. Last month, Twitter was testing giant new app install advertising right inside user feeds. That test, combined with this new test, indicates that Twitter is pushing to become an even larger source…

netflix
New Zealand internet providers have offered a service since 2014 that allows their subscribers to access the US-based version of Netflix without any tricky configuration, but now, TV broadcasters are working to outlaw such services. The service, called “global mode” uses a DNS trick to make users appear to be in the US. It’s a legal grey area that’s officially banned by Netflix’s terms and conditions, but the company hasn’t yet enforced yet. The TV networks that hold the rights to the broadcast of many popular TV shows in New Zealand aren’t so impressed, however. Earlier this week, TV broadcasters MediaWorks, Sky TV and…

Snapseed mobile photo editing app gets a huge, much-needed overhaul

googlefeat
A brand new upgrade to Snapseed, the free, all-purpose photo editing app that Google acquired in 2012, now puts the aging app on par with modern mobile photo editors. A long-needed interface refresh — even a new icon — spotlights the revitalization of Snapseed with version 2. The app had, over time, faded to the back of my pack in favor of some of some nifty new, but arguably more pro-level or specialty editors. The new Snapseed brings the app back to my primary screen. The first thing you notice is the new logo and then the clean, modern interface. Open your…
