Facebook study suggests a quarter of links you click on are against your own political views

Facebook
Most people use social media as a daily news source. That leads to concerns about a ‘filter bubble’ – if you source most of your news from friends, will you only see information skewed to a particular ideology? According to Facebook’s newest research, conducted from July 2014 to January 2015, that may not be the case. The study, published in Science, found that most people have friends with opposing political views, and that the content in their feeds is in line with that diversity. The company says that although News Feed does push up content more in line with your…

Andrianes Pinantoan heads growth marketing at Canva, an online design tool that helps you and your team create stunning visual marketing assets faster and easier than ever. Have you noticed it? Recently, more and more companies have started complaining about the declining amount of traffic Facebook drives to their website. Some have gone so far as to delete their page altogether, declaring that Facebook is dead as a free customer acquisition channel. The mindset: “An email marketing campaign gets upward of a 50 percent open rate while less than 5 percent of my fans see my Facebook updates – why…

Why your tweet about how people are voting in the UK election might be illegal

UK election law wasn’t drafted to take Twitter or Facebook into account. The legislation is hot on how the media should handle reporting on election day – basically, keep quiet about it until the polls are closed – but, as the cliche runs, we’re all publishers now on social media. That’s no problem if you just want to say how you personally voted. The Electoral Commission, which is responsible for supervising and implementing the regulations, told me: A voter may volunteer information about who they voted for, provided no undue influence is exerted on them to do so. There is no…

Chrome Beta for Android now prompts you to replace downloads instead of making duplicates

How many times have you re-downloaded a file onto your Android phone simply because it’s easier than trying to find it in a folder? Google seems to be aware of this phenomenon, as the newest version of Chrome Beta will now ask you if you want to replace an existing file, rather than just follow the previous behavior of downloading a copy labelled ‘ialreadyhavethisfile(2).jpg’ or something of the sort. It may not sound like much at first, but it’s a particularly useful addition on mobile where storage space is limited and file management is less common than on a desktop…

This video with the real-life Siri shows you what life would be like if she was your mom

If Siri was your mom
Siri can be helpful if you’re looking for directions or nearby restaurants, and moms are certainly helpful in their caring motherly ways. But what if Siri was really your mom? The video above made by the folks over at The Daily Dot gives you an idea, and let’s just say it can get pretty confusing if you’re the daughter. It’s a funny video, and it even features Siri’s actual voice actress, Susan Bennett. Read next: Apple’s Siri is a better rapper than you might expect ➤ If Siri Was Your Mom via @selenalarson
