May was a relatively quiet month in Latin America’s startup scene, but still came with its fair share of acquisitions, funding rounds and other launches. Here are the news you don’t want to miss: M&A Brazilian design crowdsourcing startups We Do Logos and Logovia announced their corporate merger, although both platforms should keep on existing separately. “Logovia will keep on operating as a self-service platform, more accessible to small business owners,” said We Do Logos’ new expansion director Carmelo Queiroz (translation ours). Expansion is one of the key goals of this deal, as the companies now hope to go international. Together, they also plan…

yahoo
Yahoo is about to end support for some products you use, and kill some you’ve probably never heard of. In Yahoo’s latest product report, we find some older Apple products are not being supported for various products. Yahoo Mail on iOS 4 or earlier (seriously) will no longer be supported, and Macs running OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion or earlier will no longer be able to sync Yahoo contacts. In addition to that, Yahoo is shuttering Maps in June, but sites like Flickr will continue to support Yahoo Maps. In Spain, Yahoo Movies is closing. Yahoo Music will be discontinued in…

Facebook Lite is a lightweight Android app for emerging markets

While Facebook is something some of us enjoy looking at daily (or hourly), the mobile app is data consumptive. For the emerging market, Facebook has launched Facebook Lite, which will strip away much of the frills for those in emerging markets. Built for Android, Facebook Lite includes core experiences like News Feed, status updates, photos and notifications. At less than 1MB, the app is meant to load and update quickly. Facebook says Lite was developed for geographies with slow connectivity, with the purpose of “giving people a reliable Facebook experience when bandwidth is at a minimum.” Facebook Lite is rolling out today…

Airbnb adds a price recommendation tool to help hosts optimize their rental pricing

PriceTips1.0
At its OpenAir Conference in San Francisco today, Airbnb announced a useful little tool to help hosts know the value of their rentals based on location and time of year. Called Price Tips, the new feature will gather recent data around demand, how much similar listings are renting for and the exact location of the listing to recommend a price that boosts the chances of it being booked. Airbnb says the tool aims to help hosts adjust prices according to various times of year – like dropping them during low travel season or increasing the rate a bit during popular festivals. The company believes that over…

Inbox by Gmail at work: Great at organizing but still overwhelming

One week ago, Google opened up Inbox by Gmail to everyone, meaning you no longer need an invite to use the email service across your personal or work domains. Google Apps users do need to activate the option in the administrative console first though. It’s not the first time I’ve tested the service, of course. I gave it a shot back at launch in October last year, but without general access to it for Apps users, Inbox wasn’t a whole lot of use. Given how many work emails there are each day, I don’t devote a lot of time to my personal…
