Microsoft may still have a streaming-only console on the drawing board

Microsoft’s new baby, the console codenamed Project Scarlett, is currently getting the lion’s share of attention. Despite not having a working model to show, Microsoft lavished the next-gen device with showtime during E3, including the world’s vaguest sizzle reel ever. But that might not be the only console the company’s working on — and if it isn’t, we might not know until after Google’s streaming-only Stadia “console” comes out. Thurrott‘s Brad Sams reported last week that Microsoft might still be working on an xCloud console, long-rumored to be in development. Originally, the word on the street was that Microsoft was…

Researchers find terrifying security vulnerability in GE Healthcare anesthesia machines

Security researchers from Israeli firm CyberMDX have discovered a vulnerability in a select number of GE Healthcare’s anesthesia and respiratory devices. CyberMDX, which focuses primarily on medical cybersecurity, states that if successfully exploited, the hole could allow an attacker to interfere the operation of these sophisticated medical machines, thereby posing a risk to patients. The vulnerability was discovered in GE’s Aestiva anesthesia delivery equipment, as well as in models 7100 and 7900 of the GE Aespire. CyberMDX states that if used, an attacker could use this vulnerability to silence alarms and tamper with logs. Worse, an attacker could even change…

Wyze’s $20 security cams can now identify people

I’m a huge fan of Wyze’s security cameras. I’ve used them for a few months. They’re dead simple, and delightfully cheap. And now they’re getting a little bit cleverer, thanks to a software update that lets them identify people through artificial intelligence. The feature is available to the most recent models, the Wyze Cam v2 and the Wyze Cam Pan smart home cameras, and is activated via a complementary firmware upgrade. Person detection is powered by computer vision software from Xnor – a Seattle-based vendor of AI computing services, which specializes in edge computing. Crucially, the Wyze Cam does the…

Vaio’s SX12 proves small laptops can have all the ports

Jul09
by Sindy Cator on July 9, 2019 at 4:23 pm
Posted In: Around the Web, Insider

Buying a compact laptop in 2019, you’re lucky if you get more than a few USB ports. Even so-called “desktop replacements” with 15-inch+ screens rarely do much better. But if Vaio’s 12.5-inch SX12 is anything to go by, it doesn’t have to be this way. Get this: A laptop no larger than a MacBook has: 3x USB-A USB-C HDMI Ethernet An SD card slot VGA(!) A headphone jack Barring a requirement for Thunderbolt 3, that should handle just about anyone’s I/O requirements. The brushed aluminum chassis has got a fair bit of power under the hood as well, with i5…

Here’s how to set up your computer to work productively from home

Welcome to TNW Basics, a collection of tips, guides, and advice on how to easily get the most out of your gadgets, apps, and other stuff. The world of work is changing, and more and more people find themselves working remotely.  Personally, I love working from home because it means I get to avoid the London Underground during rush hour (aka hell on earth) and it allows me to do my job at my own pace. Having said this, being a remote worker can get a little monotonous and I find myself struggling to remain focused and productive. With this in mind,…
