This ‘factory of factories’ helps hardware start-ups solve real problems in Kenya

[NAIROBI] Esther Mwangi, a 2014 graduate of economics from Kenyatta University in Kenya who wanted to venture into entrepreneurship but had no clear path, started off selling solar panels in coastal parts of the country as she conducted market research on other possible ventures. “I was shocked to come across statistics showing that 65 per cent of women in Kenya could not afford sanitary towels in 2016,” Mwangi told SciDev.Net. “This really touched me and moved me into thinking of how I can help provide a solution in the country.” One in every ten girls in Sub-Saharan Africa miss school…

Pakistani politician mistakes GTA V plane footage for real life: ‘Miraculous save by the pilot’

As the world gears up to deal with the confusing future of deep fakes, Pakistani government officials are still struggling to tell apart real world footage from computer-generated imagery. A local politician was caught praising an aircraft pilot for using their “presence of mind” to narrowly avoid what could’ve been a disastrous collision with a truck. The politician even shared a video of the occurrence. But there’s a catch: the footage wasn’t real – it was an outtake from Rockstar’s iconic game Grand Theft Auto V (GTA V). “Narrow escape of an aircraft which could have ended in a great disaster,”…

‘Bitcoin is digital gold’ meme becomes real as BTC and gold markets align

Bitcoin is often called “digital gold,” pitched as an alternative to the real thing. In 2019, the meme is actually real, as the two assets have performed almost identically over the past 30 days. The chart below shows the year-to-date performance of digital assets grouped by market capitalization size. Notice how large-cap cryptocurrencies (like Bitcoin) have absolutely crushed smaller projects in 2019. “Bitcoin continues to separate itself from the pack given the strength and spread of its ‘digital gold‘ narrative,” reports boutique research firm Delphi Digital in commentary shared with Hard Fork. Still, the firm warned that Bitcoin is yet…

Dear messy desk eaters, here’s your emergency fix for grease stains (at work)

Welcome to TNW Basics, a collection of tips, guides, and advice on how to easily get the most out of your gadgets, apps, and other stuff. These days, I eat in the presence of a digital device all the goddamn time. Whether it’s breakfast in front of my computer, lunch leant over a phone, or a Deliveroo’d dinner crouched above a Nintendo Switch, the technology revolution has changed my eating habits. There’s nothing intrinsically bad about this habit (apart from it destroying my posture, I guess), but there’s one unintended consequence: grease dribbles. Now, if you’re at home this annoying — especially…

Teleshopping channels are selling smartphones with misleading, high-pressure tactics

Jul09

There’s something wrong on Freeview channel 21. That’s the conclusion I landed upon after watching two hours of Ideal World, a free-to-air UK teleshopping station, where they shamelessly pitched an unambiguously low-end smartphone using sales tactics I regard as misleading and high-pressure. The phone in question was an Archos Core 57s Ultra. Details about this handset are pretty thin on the ground. It doesn’t have a GSMArena profile, which is strange, even for a fairly generic entry-level device. However, according to the manufacturer’s website, it comes with the following specs: 5.72-inch HD display Quad-core MTK6737 platform (4 * 1.3Ghz) 3GB…
