Arnold Schwarzenegger voices Waze directions so you’ll always be back

Terminator

Voice-guided navigation is useful, but sometimes the narrator is a bit too calm when you’re trying to reach a destination in a hurry, or frustrated sitting in traffic.

Waze is looking to add that sense of urgency to your driving by providing voice navigation themed to the tune of the upcoming Terminator Genysis move.

To sweeten the deal, it’s the Governator himself, Arnold Schwarzenegger, doing the talking. Some of the choice phrases include:

  • “I know where you’re going, and I will get you there… trust me”
  • “You have reached your destination… hasta la vista, baby!”
  • “Mission accomplished. It has to end here… I’ll be back!”

The voice commands are free to download; Waze users can apply them them by clicking Settings>Sound>Voice Language>Terminator Genysis.

That said, I’m still partial to Snoop Dogg’s TomTom voiceover from a few years ago:

Xbox’s new customizable Elite Controller is the Project Ara of the video games

Xbox Elite Controller

Microsoft just announced an awesome-looking new wireless controller for the Xbox One at E3.

Called the Elite Controller, it’s replete with features aimed at professional gamers. These include precision tuning, hair trigger locks, modifiable sensitivity curves and min/max values for the triggers. You can even remap the buttons and rear paddles.

Perhaps the most interesting part, however, is that you can swap out components. Don’t like the thumb stick shape? Just change it. Prefer a more traditional-feeling D-Pad? No problemo.

As with the original Xbox One controller, it’s compatible with Windows 10 as well – although there’s no word on support for older operating systems.

Your business doesn’t need an app

apps

When it comes to mastering the mobile arena, brands always start by asking the following question: is a responsive site going to do the job, or should I create an app? The answer is quite simple; if an app won’t offer users added value or an enhanced experience that otherwise wouldn’t be available (through a responsive site for example), then there’s no real purpose for it and it will most likely fail to provide real value for the brand.

For example, as of 2014, there was no CPG brand in Apple’s top 200 apps. Having an app seems like the “cool” thing to do, a reason why many brands just rush into creating an app that lacks real value. The following steps will guide you on your way to create a cool, impactful mobile campaign without ever visiting the Appstore.

Step 1: Define Your Goals

When you don’t have an app and are about to launch a mobile media campaign, the first thing you should keep in mind is that unlike other campaigns, which aim to convert impressions into users, you need to determine your own KPI (key performance indicator).

In most cases it’s probably going to be turning impressions into customers, but is it getting them to shop through your online store, having them print a coupon, or show up in your store front? That is for you to determine.

Step 2: Target Your Audience

After you’ve determined your goal, it’s time to utilize everything that mobile has to offer in order to meet that goal, with the first thing being – incredibly specific targeting. Advertisers can divide their target audience into categories, segments, and even hyper segments. Then, they make sure that different sections of their target audience are exposed to different messages and visuals according to their traits, interests, and demographics.

Step 3: Track Your Performance

The second benefit advertisers enjoy on mobile is the ability to track and measure the success of their campaign. Unlike big billboards and TV commercials where advertisers aren’t able to get a detailed review of the audience’s reaction, mobile campaigns can provide exactly that.

According to these metrics (engagement, retention, conversion, etc.), advertisers are able to adjust their message and better tend to each section of their target audience to best meet their campaign goals.

Step 4: Gamify Your Campaign

Thanks to digital advancements, mobile campaigns can also incorporate amazing interactive features and gamification elements. These can pull users in and engage them more than any other radio commercial or magazine editorial ever could. The major benefit of interactive ads is that they encourage the audience to take action, rather than just consume the message and forget about it moments later.

A great example of how a company took a mobile campaign to another level and managed to draw consumers right to its store fronts is that of an Israeli convenience store. The brand, which partnered up with a coffee house chain to bring consumers a line of fresh summer smoothies, came up with the idea of ads that encouraged users to create their own smoothie.

The ads showcased a blender and presented different kinds of fruit for users to choose from. Users could then drag their fruit of choice into the blender and physically shake their mobile phone to mix the fruit together. In order to get a free smoothie users had to offer a coupon to another friend which doubled the virality of the campaign. Once their virtual smoothie was ready, users could easily navigate to the store.

The campaign received 16 million views and generated 27K direct coupons, which were used within the stores, creating 390K in revenue, and a 15 times ROI. There you go – no app, yet still an incredibly successful campaign that engaged users and met the company’s KPI.

Step 5: Use Existing Platforms

Another recent campaign was by the Swedish film, Ex Machina. The film producers created a fake Tinder account for the leading star, an attractive 25-year-old actress who started chatting with other Tinderers at the conference. This publicity stunt is a perfect example of a brand using existing mobile platforms to create an impact, without launching its own app.

Another brand that used an existing trendy app was Pillsbury. The company teamed up with Fruit Ninja to promote its new more-fruit-filling Toaster Strudel recipe. The campaign included sponsored in-app challenges and rewards. This turned out to be a success for the Pillsbury brand – Fruit Ninja’s interactive features engaged children, while the fruit element reassured parents that the product was healthy for their kids.

These are just a few examples of how brands found creative ways to take the mobile arena by storm and significantly influence their target audience. The bottom line is that developing a mobile app may sound cool, but it’s definitely not a must.

Xbox One is now natively backwards compatible with Xbox 360 games

Jun15

Xbox

At its E3 conference today, Microsoft announced that the Xbox One has gained backwards compatibility with the Xbox 360. It’s native too, so you can use your regular Xbox 360 CDs, as opposed to the streaming method employed by Sony.

You can also use features specific to the Xbox One, including screenshots and game streaming to your PC via the Xbox app on Windows 10.

The feature is available to Xbox Preview members today – it will roll out to everyone this holiday.

There are some limitations, however: the company only said “over 100 games” will be playable. That surely will include some major titles – Mass Effect was demoed on stage, for instance  – but several less popular titles could miss out on compatibility.

It also sounds like you’ll have to save the games onto your hard drive before you can actually play them, rather than loading them right off of the CD.

Still, some backwards compatibility is better than none at all – players who’ve invested money on a library of 360 titles are sure to welcome the news.

Mobli’s EyeIn smart visual search crowdsources the right images for publishers

EyeIn

Imaging company Mobli has developed a visual search engine aimed at publishers, that combs social networks in real-time for the most relevant images and video to embed in their content.

EyeIn is smarter than your average image aggregator: it uses computer vision, natural language processing and machine learning technologies to analyze and categorize crowdsourced visual media, and surfaces the best pictures in a dynamic widget.

EyeIn widget

Let’s say you’re live-blogging a basketball game. EyeIn recognizes that a game is on between Cleveland Cavaliers and San Antonio Spurs, and pulls in pictures and video clips from Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Mobli, the company’s own image-sharing app.

But that’s not all. The engine is smart enough to correctly categorize front-cam portraits of fans as selfies, and leaves them out of its consideration set — because that’s not what the game is about. Instead, it will display pictures of players, the venue and the crowd.

EyeIn can also analyze videos and is capable of skipping uneventful clips to surface only highlights.

The tool will come in handy for publishers who want to add genuine real-time visual media to their content without breaking a sweat. EyeIn is available as a free add-on; the company will soon introduce a monetization method based on a revenue-sharing model to benefit publishers.

Ido Sadeh, COO of Mobli Media, says:

EyeIn allows publishers to bring their readers an unprecedented level of real-time access to the events and trends that matter most to them and a degree of authenticity that can only come from a purely crowdsourced platform.

EyeIn location-based search

For other users, EyeIn is a powerful image search engine that gives them a close-up look at sporting, live entertainment and breaking news events from around the world, through pictures and videos crowdsourced in real-time.
