Twitter will now autoplay videos and GIFs, but you can thankfully opt out

Twitter_feat_TNW

Your Twitter feed is about to get a lot busier. Whereas before you’d have to tap on a video start playing it, content on your feed will now start automatically.

Like Facebook, however, sound will be muted until you actually click on the video.

Autoplay_videos_on_Twitter

While some people will likely find the change annoying, Twitter says the it will help prevent users from missing out on important news and content.

Still, thankfully you can opt out if you’d rather make the choice of what to play on your own.

The change is rolling out to everyone today on Twitter.com and Twitter for iOS. An Android update to enable the feature is coming soon.

Pills, porn and LeBron James: Research finds a new way to spot malicious domains

Most of the words favored by malicious domain name owners won’t surprise you – sites found to be involved in dodgy dealing have a liking for terms related to sex, money and medication – but there are some surprises.

‘Breaking Bad: Detecting malicious domains using word segmentation‘ [PDF], a new paper from AT&T’s Security Research Center, looks at how effective studying the words in primary domain names can be in detecting illicit and illegal activity.

The larcenous lexicon they developed while working on the project shows terms such as “medic, pills, loan, fee, cash, payday, pharmacy, webcams, cams, lover, sex and porno” remain popular, along with references to luxury brands.

The big surprise is that basketball players including LeBron James, Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan are particularly popular names to drop among dodgy domain owners.

The researchers used 15,000 ‘benign’ URLs sourced from AOL’s Open Directory Project as their control group and compared them against a corpus of malicious domains.

The academics believe “the names [will] change over time as new basketball players become popular,” but it seems MJ’s popularity among the Web’s criminal classes remains strong.

They say the inclusion of numbers in a domain name is also a strong signifier that it’s an ‘unsafe’ site, though combinations such as 411, 365 and 123 are more likely to be safe.

The researchers suggest their word-segmentation methods could be used to power “near real time detection” of malicious domains on mobile combined with Web content-based analysis and machine learning.

Their ideas for combating ‘bad’ domains such as active blocking or inserting a ‘speed bump’ to warn users are good, unless you’re a legitimate site owner hit with a false alarm. But then, perhaps you shouldn’t be running a site called LeBron5678pillsandporno.net in the first place.

Node.js and io.js are settling their differences, merging back together

Earlier this year, a number of Node.js developers started their own fork of the framework, io.js, after a public spat with the “steward” of the framework, Joyent.

Today, the Linux Foundation has announced that Node.js and io.js will officially merge codebases under a new entity: the ‘Node Foundation.’

A number of partners have come onboard to sponsor the new organization and help it stay independent, including Famous, IBM, Intel, Joyent, Microsoft and PayPal.

The idea with the new foundation is that Node.js gains a “neutral structure” in order to “balance the needs of the community.” It will use an open governance foundation which will allow public contribution to the roadmap.

Jim Zemlin, executive director at The Linux Foundation said that “by tapping into the strength of an empowered, unified community, the Node.js Foundation will advance this rapidly growing platform that supports millions of users around the world.”

The Linux Foundation will oversee contributions to the code and facilitate discussions going forward.

In its role as steward, Joyent’s task was to keep Node.js on track and ensure its consistent development. Talk of a possible split from Node.js began in mid-2014 and reached a fever-pitch as development of the framework continued to slow and talks broke down with Joyent.

Eventually, io.js was born, as a fork of Node that moved development in a community direction, much more in the open. After months of pressure, Joyent backed down as steward and handed Node off to the independent organization.

Today’s news is good for developers and companies who had bet on either of the frameworks — it means Node.js as a whole will move forward much faster and that many of the original contributors are back working on the same codebase.

Shenmue III makes a heroic comeback, becomes the fastest game to hit $2 million Kickstarter goal

Shenmue III, the long-awaited follow-up to the adventure series, has managed to reach its Kickstarter goal of $2 million in less than 12 hours.

The campaign went live during Sony’s PlayStation press conference at E3 yesterday. The game was originally made for Sega’s Dreamcast in 1999, but Sony now owns the rights.

With 30 days left in the campaign its likely to hit its goals of adding subtitles and a “Cinema Short” summary of the first two games.

When the campaign launched on Kickstarter, the site was overwhelmed by the level of interest and started to lag.

Site performance is back up to speed. We're still monitoring everything. We've never seen anything like this. Thanks for your patience! #E3

— Kickstarter (@kickstarter) June 16, 2015

The games creator, Yu Suzuki, came onstage at the press conference to say that he had chosen to crowdfund the project so fans could have more of a say in bringing the game to life.

Shenmue III isn’t expected to ship until December 2017 for PC and the PlayStation 4, so there’s plenty of time to play the originals until then.

The Match-Up lets you customize a subscription hair care box without a trip to the salon

the match up esalon

Another day, another new monthly “curated” subscription box.

That’s what I used to say, at least, about the seemingly never-ending trend of new services with the same premise. But when it comes to hair, it’s a whole ‘nother monster.

Los Angeles-based eSalon has launched a new service that will send you a box of hair products tailored to your specific hair type and concerns.

Called The Match-Up, all you have to do to get started is answer a short questionnaire. In a few clicks, you’ll get three recommended products – with room for two additional products if you need a little more.

For me, I have long, wavy hair with concerns about volume and dryness. The Match-Up offered up volumizing shampoo and conditioner, along with a heat protectant.

If you don’t like what’s offered, you can browse through the catalog to swap anything in your box. It’s designed so that you do not get stocks of the same item if you haven’t finished last month’s shipment. Alternatively, you can change the frequency of deliveries to match how quickly you go through products.

eSalon launched in 2010 with subscriptions to custom hair color dyes based on your current shade, type and the color you want to achieve. eSalon CEO Francisco Gimenez says the idea of The Match-Up is to help alleviate the cost of getting salon-quality hair product recommendations.

“To get recommendations, you first have to go to a professional salon,” he tells us. It’s not only difficult to get an appointment and commute to the salon, but the process is expensive – an average haircut in New York City starts around $60.

The service also offers a customer service line with licensed haircare professionals to walk users through the products in case they have questions about how to effectively use them. If you’re still unhappy with the products, eSalon promises to replace the item or refund your purchase.

“You don’t get this kind of service with Amazon subscriptions,” Gimenez says.

At $30 a month, The Match-Up boxes are a steal for customized haircare products. First-time customers also get a 50 percent off discount to give the service a go. For those whose hair care routine is more of an inconvenience than a day of pamper, this could be a neat way to manage your tresses without putting in that much effort.
