Sean Parker’s new political app Brigade has launched in private beta

Sean Parker has had his hits (Napster, getting on the Facebook train early) – and his misses (Airtime, Plaxo, some of his haircuts.) Now he’s backing a new iOS and Android app for sharing political opinions called Brigade.

It’s available to download now but you won’t get past the login screen until the private beta invites go out later in the summer.

The concept is that you’re presented with a newsfeed of topics where you can agree, disagree or declare yourself one of life’s floating voters by opting for ‘unsure.’

Your beliefs are then compared to your friends’ and those of the wider user population so you see how you stack up. It’s a potentially addictive way of getting people to engage with politics. That said, it’s also likely to appeal to those who are already interested.

As you’d expect, the early coverage of Brigade has been pretty frothy. Parker is huge name, but he’s actually the company’s chairman. Matt Mahan is the CEO, having previously led Causes, which Parker co-founded.

Brigade Media acquired Causes last year in a bit of incredibly incestuous Silicon Valley action.

Brigade has arrived at a good time as the 2016 presidential election primary campaigns kick into gear, but Parker’s involvement is no guarantee of success. We’ll have to see how good the app is once it opens its doors.

Nokia’s ex-CEO, Stephen Elop, is leaving Microsoft

Just over a year after selling Nokia to Microsoft, Stephen Elop is leaving the company.

Elop had joined Microsoft as part of the sale and was given the role of Executive Vice President, Devices & Services.

It’s odd that he’s stepping down, only a year after officially joining the company. Satya Nadella, Microsoft’s CEO said in a memo to all staff that it was “the right time for him to retire from Microsoft.”

With Elop’s departure, Terry Myerson, previously Executive Vice President of Operating Systems, will take on his role leading a new group inside the company: the Windows and Devices Group.

The Windows and Devices group is a result of the Operating Systems Group (which builds Windows) and the Devices Group (which builds the Surface, Xbox and other hardware) merging into one.

Satya Nadella, Microsoft’s CEO sent out an all-staff memo regarding Elop stepping down, saying:

When Stephen Elop returned to Microsoft, he oriented MDG to create the best Microsoft experience through its devices, inclusive of hardware, software and services. He has been a strong advocate of the need to drive focus and accountability around the delivery of these experiences and has helped drive tighter alignment toward the ambition of more personal computing.

With the structural change described above, Stephen and I have agreed that now is the right time for him to retire from Microsoft. I regret the loss of leadership that this represents, and look forward to seeing where his next destination will be.

You can read Nadella’s full email to staff here.

Amazon announces a 300 DPI Kindle Paperwhite, still $119

The Kindle Paperwhite is about to get a lot easier to read. Amazon today announced the successor to its best-selling Kindle, with an improved high-resolution display, Amazon’s new font and an advanced typesetting engine.

The new model takes a page out of the Voyage’s book with a 300 DPI e-ink panel, or twice the resolution of the previous panel. That should make text look a lot clearer, with the pixel density we now typically expect of smartphones.

It also includes a new font specifically designed for reading on digital screens, called Bookerly. Amazon says it’s great for reading at any size, and takes advantage of the improved screen so that you can read with less eye strain. Bookerly was first introduced in May, and is already available on mobile.

Bookerly_Muscat_791x1079Amazon also created a new typesetting engine that helps keep the reading experience more akin to a physical book. It’s now able to hyphenate to keep layout edges sharper, for instance, while new kerning automatically adjusts character spacing to remove distracting whitespace.

Ligatures_KerningThe company says its new engine also improves the overall page layout, with better support for dropcaps and images while still allowing you to change your font size and line spacing. Your layout, indents, and and margins will dynamically change as you edit either of those parameters.

The font and layout improvements wil be available on “over half a million books,” and Amazon will be converting more every week. The features will arrive through an over-the-air update, and older Kindle models will be upgraded to the Bookerly font as well.

Thankfully, Amazon was able to introduce the new features without changing the price; it still costs $119, with pre-orders starting today and the first units shipping June 30.
