Iblazr² is a wireless flash that promises to improve your smartphone photos

Almost two years after the first generation of Iblazr flashes was announced, the Ukrainian developers behind it are launching a $70,000 Kickstarter campaign for their next big thing, Iblazr². The new 4-LED flash connects to iOS and Android devices via Bluetooth and works with native camera apps out of the box.

Available to the first 1,000 backers for just $45, Iblazr² measures 40×28×10 mm and can be attached to your smartphone with a clip shipped with the device. In addition to that, there’s a cold shoe mount to use it with all kinds of digital cameras. Bluetooth connection also allows the flash to sync in the range of up to 25 meters from the phone.

The main control element of the new flash is a sensor panel on its back, through which it’s possible to change color temperature between 3200K and 5600K. The main function of the sensor, however, is to actually take photos with native smartphone apps: to do that, you need to double tap the panel, and that’s the only way to make it work.

Iblazr² also comes with a companion app of its own, in which it is actually possible to take shots by tapping on the phone screen. Called Shotlight, it’s supposed to be a versatile camera application with a number of manual settings to play with. Among its features is the possibility to sync up to 10 flashes to set up complex lighting schemes.

ibl-sync

The device can work in the continuous lighting mode for shooting video. Its 130 mAh battery is enough to provide three hours of light or 300 flashes.

Iblazr² is the third project of the Ukrainian team, after the first generation of the flash and a phone case Lunecase, which raised about $156,000 each. In their Kickstarter video, the team mentions they’re “very proud of” never raising external funding from venture capitalists.

The Unicode Consortium has today released Unicode 8, an update to the specification that defines official emoji, so we get our first glimpse at what’s coming in the future.

Unicode 8.0 includes a number of new emoji, including a taco, burrito, face with rolling eyes, cheese wedge, a crab, thinking face, nerd face, lion face and more.

Now that the standard is official, phone operating system makers like Apple and Google need to adopt it for future versions.

Apple was the first to adopt the new racially diverse emoji earlier this year, so it’s likely these new emoji should appear in iOS 9 when it’s released this fall.

You can head over to Emojipedia to get a peek at the 37 new emoji which should land on your phone later this year.

Dropbox is making it easy to request large files from anyone

Dropbox is adding a small feature that could make it easier for others to share files with you.

While shared folders are an important part of collaboration on any cloud storage service, usually it’s just one person doing the sharing. The new file requests feature helps you collect files and documents from others, whether they have a Dropbox account or not.

file-requests

It could be useful way of collecting documents, especially from multiple people. It prevents running into attachment limits on email, and since all the files you receive are stored on a single folder, you can access related items all in one place.

Dropbox says the files are labelled by sender too, so they’re easier to identify; it’s not hard to image how it could come in handy to collect documents from coworkers or friends for projects or events.

Dropbox Basic and Pro users can start sending out file requests as of today via dropbox.com/requests. Business users will have to wait a few weeks before they can try it out.

Microsoft merges hardware and software divisions after leadership shakeup

Surface 3-24

Microsoft today announced the surprise news that it was parting ways with Stephen Elop, Nokia’s ex-CEO just over a year it purchased the mobile company, but buried in the announcement was a bigger piece of news.

Under the reorganization, Microsoft is merging both its hardware and operating systems divisions into a single group, overseen by Terry Myerson, former head of the Operating Systems division.

That means that the group responsible for developing hardware including the Surface tablet, Xbox and other products will also be building the Windows operating system.

The merged division will be called the ‘Windows and Devices Group (WDG)’ and is “focused on enabling more personal computing experiences powered by the Windows ecosystem.”

The move is a sizable one, throwing further weight behind Microsoft’s ambitions to continue create its own hardware lines rather than simply relying on its OEM partners to build the right devices.

There’s a few questions lingering after today’s announcement: what does this mean for the seemingly stagnant Lumia phone lineup? Will the Microsoft Surface continue as it is already? Does this signal a new Windows strategy?

I’ve reached out to Microsoft for comment and will update when we hear back.

California Labor Commission rules Uber drivers are employees, not independent contractors

Uber-Privacy-798x310

The California Labor Commission has ruled Uber drivers are employees and not independent contractors, Reuters reports.

The ruling has serious implications for Uber’s business model, since the company will now be required to offer its drivers benefits that meet the requirements of the Californian labor laws.

Based in San Francisco, Uber’s headquarters employs approximately 1,000+ people. Its product acts as a logistics software that connects drivers to riders, offers turn-by-turn directions and simplifies the transaction.

Although Uber does not hand-select its fleet of drivers, it promotes an open invitation to anyone aged 21 or older with a commercial driver’s license, a car (models 2000 or 2005 later, depending on the city) and presumably a clean driving record.

Uber was careful to word its driver sign-up page, calling for “independent contractors.”

Counting drivers as employees would mean Uber has to seriously scale down its number of drivers if it is to provide health benefits and pay social security and medicare taxes. Uber would have to cover other work-related expenses, such as gas, car insurance and repairs.

Naturally, Uber will appeal the commissioner’s award of about $4,000 in expenses to its drivers.
