realtimedata

Google’s Trend page is a fun way to look at how different search terms have waxed and waned in popularity over time, but today it’s getting a makeover with a heavier emphasis on real-time data.

The revamped site now lets you browse trends on a minute-by-inute basis, allowing you to track stories as they happen during major live events like awards shows or sports championships.

storycentric

The new homepage ranks trends in real time, also tracking popular videos and articles on YouTube and Google News. Google also says it’s expanded its coverage to help find more niche topics is smaller geographical areas.

Aesthetically, Trends now has a heavy dose of Material Design, Google’s new UI for all its apps and services. For data enthusiasts, Google is now publishing data on specific topics via GitHub.

The redesigned homepage is available now in 28 countries; Google says it will be available in more places in the coming months.

Square brings its 15-minute, $15 Fastbite food delivery service to NYC

Fastbite by Caviar NY Kale Salad

A little under a year ago, Square got itself into the food delivery business by purchasing Caviar. Then it bought Fastbite two months ago to help bolster Caviar’s high-end restaurant menu with quick, cheap menu items – but that service was limited to San Francisco.

Now it’s bringing Fastbite to New York – or a portion of Manhattan, at least. During peak lunch and dinner hours, a Fastbite tab will appear on the Caviar app on Android or iOS. Or, you can order from the Web.

Fastbite items all cost $15 or less with a 15 minute delivery time, and you can track your orders with GPS via the apps. Your options are limited to a small curated set of single-serving meals, but the point is to grab you a quick meal without requiring too much thought.

Though it’s currently limited to just some areas of Manhattan, Square says it will expand to more neighborhoods soon.

whetlab

Twitter has acquired Whetlab, a machine learning firm. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

Currently, Twitter is only saying Whetlab will “accelerate” its machine learning efforts. Twitter didn’t offer specifics on what machine learning inititatives it would be using Whetlab for, but analytics is a safe bet.

We’ve acquired @whetlab to accelerate Twitter’s machine learning efforts. https://t.co/wGXuHUc36a

— Twitter Engineering (@TwitterEng) June 17, 2015

Twitter uses machine learning for Hadoop-based analytics, and Whetlab provided a similar service to its clients ahead of this acquisition. Whetlab will end its closed beta program for clients on July 15.

Via its website, Whetlab says “Twitter is the platform for open communication on the internet and we believe that Whetlab’s technology can have a huge and positive impact through it.”

We’ve reached out to Twitter for details on the acquisition, and will update if we hear back.

Optimizely promises Netflix-style personalization for every Web site

If you’ve ever noticed a Web site offering up different headlines for the same piece of content, there’s a good chance that was down to Optimizely. It’s a big name in A/B testing and has just launched its latest product – Optimizely Personalization.

The company claims it’s been involved with over 30 billion experiences, which it defines as when someone reads an article, buys a product or opens an app. The point of its personalization product is to make more of those interactions.

Jon Noronha, a Senior Product Manager at Optimizely, used a supermarket analogy when talking me through the release:

Grocery stores famously do a lot of A/B testing, but they’re most successful when they personalize the experience – they’ll put the tasty cereals at the bottom where kids will see them and the healthy stuff at the top to catch parents’ eyes.

If you look at the most savvy services online – Amazon, Netflix, Facebook– they’ve got really sophisticated personalization built in. The problem is that hasn’t been accessible to most websites and apps.

That’s what Optimizely thinks it can now provide. The new tools allow sites and apps to optimize the experience they offer based on behavior. The key is ‘visual tagging’, which lets you tag specific parts of a page to measure how visitors interact with them.

The company is also integrating with third-party data providers to bring that information into its user dashboard, so customers can use it to tweak their personalization efforts.

Interactive analytics let you see, in real-time, how different factors affect particular audiences compared to the average. Optimizely also promises that it has implemented machine learning which will identify new audience groups.

I put it to Noronha that many Web users find personalization a little uncomfortable as it sparks questions about where and how their data is being used. He returned to that grocery store analogy:

We show you content where you’ve already shown intent by visiting. The creepy end of personalization is where it feels like it moves into the rest of your life, like the guy from the store chasing after you saying you forgot the Fruit Loops.

Optimizely has launched Personalization in private beta today. You can you join the waiting list here. It’ll open up to everyone in the fall.

The man behind Microsoft’s dirty tricks has left just in time for Clinton 2016

The headline news from Redmond today is that Stephen Elop, the Microsoft man who went to Nokia and ended up selling it to the mothership, is out and its OS and hardware divisions are merging.

But there was another significant move: Mark Penn is going too.

Penn is a former Clinton advisor – he steered Bill’s 1996 re-election campaign and was at the heart of Hilary’s damp squib effort in 2008 – but during his time at Microsoft, he was the driving force behind its dirtiest tricks.

He masterminded the company’s controversial Scroogled campaign, a two-year assault on practically every Google product you can imagine. It included multiple ads and even ‘Keep Calm While Google Steals Your Data’ apparel.

Penn’s efforts to bring political-style attack ads to the world of tech were largely unsuccessful and widely derided. He was also a highly-divisive figure during Clinton’s previous primary campaign.

That said, while his next move is setting up a private equity firm with cash from former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, his September departure date will make him available just as the run up to 2016 starts to really ramp up.

There’ll be plenty of staffers in the Clinton 2016 campaign hoping he stays well away.
