IntelUbuntuComputeStick
Canonical has announced that an Ubuntu-flavored version of the Intel Compute Stick will go on sale next week, priced at around $110, via online and brick-and-mortar stockists. Essentially, the Intel Compute Stick is an HDMI dongle that you plug into a TV or monitor to get a PC-like experience, which makes it attractive for use as a halfway house between something like a Chromecast and having a full media center plugged into your TV, for example. The stick will ship with the 64-bit version of Ubuntu 14.04 LTS pre-installed and has an Intel Atom 1.3Ghz quad-core processor, 1GB RAM and…

Back in May, Facebook promised to publish an open source reference implementation and language specification for GraphQL, the query language for graph data that powers interactions in its Android and iOS applications. And, lo and behold, that’s just what it’s done. You can now get your hands on a draft Request for Comments (RFC) specification for the language and take a look at a reference implementation on GitHub. GraphQL was built during Facebook’s move away from HTML5 apps to full native implementations. It’s a querying language designed to describe complex, nested data dependencies. Facebook says the aim of putting the information…

youtube
Between work, life, gaming and the growing pile of articles I’ve saved to read later, I rarely find time to catch up on all the latest videos from my favorite YouTube channels. Luckily, there’s a tool for that — and it’s built in. Click the gear icon on any YouTube video and you can adjust the playback speed, all the way from a crawling 0.25x to a blistering 2x. The feature has been around for ages, but I’ve only been using it for a month. I wish I discovered its benefits sooner. What can you watch faster? I watch a…

More than half of respondents to this Ponemon study say their organization currently transfers sensitive or confidential data to the cloud. Still, more than half of IT professionals admit not having a complete picture of where their sensitive data lives. As the cloud continues to expand across industries around the world, it’s apparent that even more mission critical operations and services are being moved to cloud-based SaaS applications.
