hacking
The cybersecurity industry can be romanticized as a crime-fighting cabal of protectors facing off against hackers to keep the Internet safe. In this version of the story, there are good guys and bad guys, and the good guys do everything they can to keep their adversaries at bay. Unfortunately, this is just a story. The reality is that cybersecurity is a corrupt industry that needs bad guys to stay lucrative. Major security technology vendors are running a billion dollar con by selling software that they know won’t work. This scam makes them arguably more corrupt than the hackers themselves. Broken…

Apple Watch outside
Yesterday, it was the hottest day in July ever recorded in the UK – hitting a sweltering 37 celcius in some spots. It was also the day that I got locked out of my new apartment in London. The frustration passed – I didn’t forget my keys, they just no longer worked – and a locksmith turned up. I was back inside within a few minutes of him arriving. Once in, the locksmith started asking what I did for a living, so I explained. He then proceeded to ask whether or not he should buy his 11-year old son an Apple…

Twitter unveiled Audience Insights back in May to help brands get a better grasp of the people they reach on the platform. Now the company is upgrading Insights with new demographic data, buying behavior and more. First up, Twitter is introducing something they call ‘personas,’ which are basically quick ways to categorize audiences based on similar attributes. Some of these include ‘millenials,’ ‘baby boomers,’ and ‘business decision-makers.’ Brands can then quickly target them in a campaign with just one click, though they can refine the audience within each persona. For example, a brand could choose to only targetSeniors that use iOS. Another update to the dashboard now…

Ingress, the augmented reality game from Google, has come under fire for having Nazi concentration camps as points of interest. Google apologized for the inclusion of the camps and has removed them. Produced by Google’s Niantic Labs, Ingress adds points of interest submitted by gamers, which are then approved by Ingress staff. The game uses those points of interest as base-camps for the resistance or enlightened factions respectively. Approved locations are typically historical landmarks; something a Nazi concentration camp is, but they’re not suitable for inclusion in a game. In a statement, Niantic’s lead John Hanke said: “After we were made…

Readdle does good of job of making apps to deal with PDFs and other documents. The latest update to its scanning app, Scanner Pro for iOS, will delight people who deal with a lot of paperwork and, potentially, the next Edward Snowden. The update is free to existing users. The developers are running a launch sale if you’re downloading it for the first time, dropping the price to $2.99 from the usual $6.99. The company says it tested the utility with over 500,000 documents to create the new Scan Radar feature which automatically detects images of documents in your camera…
