iTunes sucks: A GIF guide to why Apple’s desktop music app must be fixed

EverythinSucksFeat
The arrival of Apple Music brought an update for iTunes on the desktop and while the iOS Music app has plenty of UI/UX quirks that need to be ironed out, it’s the old war horse that’s really struggling. It’s hardly a new complaint, but the reality is iTunes sucks. It’s the most embarrassing part of Apple’s software suite, a roach motel for half-thought out features, a Hotel California for your media library. Where iOS has separate apps for music, video and podcasts, iTunes persists in trying to serve all of those mediums well, while also acting as a storefront and hub for your…

Uber testing suggested pickup points to help save you time finding your next ride

uber-suggested-pickup
Uber is finally testing a feature called “suggested pickup points” which provides recommendations on the easiest place to catch your ride. Spotted by TechCrunch, the new feature appears when you drag the pickup pin over a location that could be hard to get an Uber to. It sounds like a good fix for a problem we’ve all faced: wondering where our cab actually is after the app says it’s arrived. The feature is only in testing right now, but would be particularly useful in places like airports. I’ve often found it impossible to track down an Uber in unfamiliar places like Amsterdam, because…

Hacking Team, the infamous group that sold hacking tools to spy agencies around the world, was hacked earlier this week and all its internal documents released online. As a result of those documents, Adobe has issued an alert about a vulnerability in Flash which Hacking Team was using to exploit victims’ computers. The security hole, which could allow attackers to take control of the system, works across Windows, Mac and Linux. First spotted by Trend Micro researchers, the document described the “most beautiful Flash bug for the last four years” and included a proof-of-concept for exploiting the hole and writing to memory.…

Logitech probably isn’t a name you associate with beautiful products, but the company hopes you will. Today the company has announced a new logo and brand identity intended to bring a “colorful new attitude” to its products. A new label, “Logi,” will appear on future products and Logitech hints that there will be “surprises” in new product categories. It’s also hired ex-Nokia design chief Alastair Curtis, its first Chief Design Officer, to put “design at the core” of its products for the first time. ➤ Say Hello To The New Logitech [Logitech]

trust
We’re all creatures of habit with predictable minds. If you know how to take advantage of your user’s habits, such as with hooks and behavioral cues, you can create processes for building trust. Photo credit: Marcin Treder The following seven tips act as either conscious or subconscious signals to your users that you’re worth their time. Some rely on social proof, while others function on a more complex psychological level. If you’d still like to learn more about subtle design techniques, feel free to check out the free e-book Interaction Design Best Practices: Mastering the Intangibles. 1. Respect the Power…
