Here’s the real story of a fake logo in HBO’s ‘Silicon Valley’

If you haven’t caught it yet, HBO’s ‘Silicon Valley‘ is a fantastic satirical take on the state of San Francisco’s startup culture. One of the show’s fictitious companies, Hooli, is a sprawling giant that resembles Google. Now the designer that updated its logo for the newest season, Dan Petty, has published the concept decks he sent to ‘Silicon Valley’ creator Mike Judge, back in August 2014. My personal favorites are the mockups of Hooli’s search engine, which looks a lot like Bing. It even features alternatives to the Hooli XYZ logo, which is a fun prod at Google’s top-secret moonshot lab, Google…

apps
Contextual information is changing the world. We have more data available to us than ever before, and much of it is being generated and consumed by the mobile devices in our pockets. Right now, businesses are creating systems and apps that will enable us to act on that data to automate our lives. Apple and Google, as the two most important entities in the mobile industry, are leading the way and opening up new, exciting possibilities for app creators. But questions have recently been raised about what the future holds for custom apps, as mobile operating systems become more intelligent.…

customize
Amazon has a nifty new trick: you can 3D print your favorite character from a number of video games and customize them to your heart’s content. Right now, the site lets you interactively customize 35 characters from Smite, Primal Carnage and Infinity Blade. Once you customize your character Amazon will print it on-demand and deliver it directly to the buyer. The customization is done inside Sandboxr’s tool, which allows you to interact with a 360-degree model of the action figure. You can customize everything from the weapon it holds to the way it stands. Prices start at $29.99 for the smaller action figures and larger models can cost right…

A consumer advocacy group in the US is urging the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to investigate why Google hasn’t extended this option to users in the country. Consumer Watchdog’s privacy project director John Simpson wrote to the FTC yesterday, complaining that though Google claims to be dedicated to user privacy, its reluctance to allow Americans to remove ‘irrelevant’ search results is “unfair and deceptive.” Following a ruling passed in the European Union last year, Google began honoring users’ requests to remove irrelevant, outdated or inflammatory search results…
