LONDON, ENGLAND - JULY 20: DST Global Founder Yuri Milner and Theoretical Physicist Stephen Hawking ahead of a press conference on the Breakthrough Life in the Universe Initiatives, hosted by Yuri Milner and Stephen Hawking, at The Royal Society on July 20, 2015 in London, England. Professor Stephen Hawking and Yuri Milner, the immensely wealthy Russian tycoon with stakes in Facebook and Alibaba, have announced a $100 million project to search for intelligent extraterrestrial life. The plan has two parts – Breakthrough Initiative (a 10-year study using two huge telescopes to survey 1,000,000 nearby stars) Breakthrough Listen (a wider search using open data and open source software) There is also a $1 million prize for anyone who presents credible evidence of alien life. Essentially, this is all about ensuring that we, as a species, actually have our ears open and are listening for signals that other…

Spotify want to help make it easier to find new music you’ll enjoy listening to. The streaming service today launched the Discover Weekly playlist, which contains a personalized selection of songs based on your listening habits. Now when you log into Spotify, you’ll see Discover Weekly at the top of the playlists section of the app. It’s not jut a collection of the songs you already like either; Spotify says the playlist will sometimes try to nudge you in new directions and take into account the habits of people with similar tastes as well. Your Discover Weekly selection is updated…

appstore
App developers are familiar with the importance of App Store Optimization – the holy grail of organic traffic. After all, most downloads stem from basic App store search, and making sure your app is among the first options presented to users is the best way to drive traffic more organic than Wholefoods. Performing a solid keyword research is a crucial part of ASO (some might say it’s the only part, and they’d be absolutely wrong, but that’s for another post), and yet many developers still believe they can do it all on their own – just give them the right…

amazon
If you need to deploy any kind of application, especially one that needs room to grow, Amazon is a great place to host it. These four courses show you how to configure the perfect AWS setup. The tuition starts from scratch, looking at the various services Amazon provides, such as EC2, S3, and the Route53 Domain Name System. In each case, you learn how to work with the infrastructure. That includes developing SQL-free databases, setting up load balancers, scaling with EC2, and using S3 for storage. There is an emphasis on making apps scalable and fault-tolerant, too. Much of this is…

KFC_Fakation
The summer is a wonderful time, but there’s one problem if you have no plans to go away on vacation – other people’s holiday photos. Be it Facebook, Instagram or any other sharing platform, at about this time of year you can hardly scroll through a feed without seeing yet another pair of ‘hotdog legs’. KFC in Romania has come up with an answer to this conundrum, however: it wants you to troll your friends with fake vacations photos. ‘Fakation’ photos, if you prefer. Of course, given that it’s a promo for a fast food joint, KFC wants you to…
