Welcome to TNW Basics, a collection of tips, guides, and advice on how to easily get the most out of your gadgets, apps, and other stuff. Tired of Facebook too? We’ve got a guide for that. Oh, and Instagram? Yep, here’s how to delete that too. What, and Twitter? Here’s all you need to know.  Social platforms like Snapchat walk a fine line between being handy and consuming your whole life. Study: Influencers can’t even influence anymore

It’s become impossible to scroll through Instagram without seeing a #sponsored post, perfectly staged product photos, or an influencer selling her own bathwater. The industry seemed unstoppable, but a recent study has revealed that influencer engagement rates are nearing an all-time low.  Littered Instagram feeds mean users are tapping ‘like’ less than ever before. This  study by Mobile Marketer measured engagement with a like-follower ratio, or by the average number of likes on a post compared to the follower count. In 2019, the engagement rate for sponsored posts fell to 2.4 from 4 percent three years earlier.  And it’s not…

German schools ban Microsoft Office 365 amid privacy concerns

Microsoft’s cloud services has run into a fresh roadblock in Germany, after the state of Hesse ruled it is illegal for its schools to use Office 365 citing “privacy concerns.” The Hesse Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information (HBDI) ruled that using the popular cloud platform’s standard configuration exposes personal information about students and teachers “to potential access by US authorities.” In declaring that Windows 10 and Office 365 is not compliant with EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) for use in schools, this development ends years of debate over whether “schools can use Microsoft’s Office 365 software in compliance…

There are few things that feel more like the future than walking into your home and barking an order to your lightbulbs to switch on. Your lightbulbs don’t have feelings.  Go ahead, treat them like shit. They might not deserve it, because they seem to work most of the time. But Mondays can be frustrating, can’t they, friend? And it’s better to yell at your obedient lightbulbs than your cat. Or significant other. Or even your fridge. Your fridge won’t respond, unlike your smart lightbulbs. Yes. Good. Just let it out. Now turn them off again. Or better yet, switch…

EU’s GPS-like Galileo satellites have been down since July 11

Europe’s positioning satellites, Galileo, have been out of action since July 11 for mysterious reasons. On the page showing the current situation of all 22 satellites, it’s showing “Not Usable” or “Testing” as the status. As GPSWorld noted, the outage began on July 11 at 1 pm CET. On July 13, the European GNSS Service Agency – the organization responsible for providing service for the positioning system – issued a statement saying users may experience service degradation until further notice:  Until further notices, users may experience service degradation on all Galileo satellites. This means that the signals may not be available…
