Quotable

"Obama's first televised address to the nation from the Oval Office proved one thing: He is fundamentally transforming America, into a nation of polluted waters and lands, political name calling, and a clear plan to fail everybody, except the enemies of America. And yes, I do believe he loves America. I just think he's a hyphenated-American. To be specific, when it comes to his politics, I believe he's what is known as an idiotic-American." ~ Yasha Harari

How to send uncompressed images on WhatsApp

Jul19

Welcome to TNW Basics, a collection of tips, guides, and advice on how to easily get the most out of your gadgets, apps, and other stuff. WhatsApp is notorious for compressing its images, so that otherwise-beautiful pictures look like they were shot from a generations-old camera phone. I exaggerate only slightly. Luckily there’s an easy way to “trick” WhatsApp into sending a good image without having to download any third-party software or stressing yourself out. The screenshots for this article are for iOS, since I have an iPhone handy, but I’ll also describe the process for Android as well, since the basic…

Pro baseball league uses AI umpire for the first time, coach gets ejected for arguing with it

You’re outta here! Professional baseball‘s first AI umpire – in the form of an automated strike zone – didn’t take long to chalk up its first ejection after 1988 Cy Young winner and current pitching coach of the Atlantic League’s Highpoint Rockers, Frank Viola Jr., was tossed for his profanity-laced disagreement with the machine’s ruling. We’re with Frank. The Rockers and the Atlantic League are an independent baseball league not directly affiliated with Major Leage Baseball, but the new AI systems in use are part of a partnership between the two. As part of a three-year deal, the Atlantic League’s…

Consoles aren’t selling because the next-gen is coming

Sales of current-generation consoles are starting to drop dramatically — most likely because the next generation is on the horizon. While we won’t see new consoles until next year, it appears consumers are already starting to save their money in anticipation. The Switch, however, is the exception to this. Microsoft yesterday revealed its Q4 fiscal year earnings, and noted console sales were sluggish: “Xbox hardware revenue declined 48%, primarily due to a decrease in volume of consoles sold.” Sony released its fiscal year financial results earlier this year, and also reported a decline in PS4 sales. While some units are still…

Google expected to achieve quantum supremacy in 2019: Here’s what that means

Jul19

Google‘s reportedly on the verge of demonstrating a quantum computer capable of feats no ordinary classical computer could perform. The term for this is quantum supremacy, and experts believe the Mountain View company could be mere months from achieving it. This may be the biggest scientific breakthrough for humanity since we figured out how to harness the power of fire. Here’s what you need to know before it happens. Functional quantum computers currently exist – IBM, D-Wave, Google, Microsoft, Rigetti, and dozens of other companies and universities are working tirelessly to develop them – but none of them actually do…
