The Russian surveillanceware saga continues. Canadian cybersecurity researchers have discovered a new set of Android surveillance tools originating from Russia. The kicker? The spyware can be found in numerous fake apps disguised as legitimate software from Google, Pornhub, Skype, and many other familiar brands. The spying toolset, dubbed Monokle, was purportedly developed by St. Petersburg-based private defense contractor Special Technology Center (STC) known for its ties to Moscow-headquartered Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU), according to a report from security firm Lookout. Indeed, STC was one of the three entities Barack Obama sanctioned for meddling in the 2016 US elections and providing “material support to…

A contract programmer has pleaded guilty to planting “logic bombs” inside a client’s spreadsheets in an attempt to receive extra work from the company every time the software crashed. David Tinley — the Pennsylvania-based 62-year-old contract programmer in question — now faces a fine of up to $250,000, up to 10 years in prison, or both. According to court documents, Tinley offered software services to Siemens’ Monroeville, PA office for about 10 years. He had been hired to create custom, automated spreadsheets that were used by the firm to manage orders for electrical equipment. Tinley planted logic bombs in these…

A federal grand jury has indicted a New Jersey man for selling over $2 million worth of Bitcoin through an unlicensed money transmitting business. William Green, 46, who was charged with one count of operating the unlicensed business, is set to appear before a United States District Judge although no date has been set yet. According to documents filed and statements heard in court, Green’s business was “Destination Bitcoin,” a website that allowed him to convert customers’ fiat deposits into Bitcoin in exchange for a fee. Unfortunately for Green, US federal law says that any individual who owns or controls…

Dating app ‘reviews’ won’t tackle harassment

Jul25

This article was originally published on SEXTECHGUIDE, an independent publication that looks at the intersection between sex and technology in a non-explicit, as close to a ‘safe for work’ way as possible – including app reviews, adult VR info, sextech devices, privacy, security issues, and much more. It was founded by ex-TNW European Editor Ben Woods, and can be found on Twitter and Facebook.   While the explosion of modern online dating has connected people romantically and sexually on an unprecedented level, it’s also not without its share of problems, particular if you’re a woman. Harassment, hostility, and objectification towards women via dating apps are…
