Astroforensics could be one of the coolest new careers of the future

Nasa’s Artemis program is scheduled to return astronauts to the Moon and establish a permanent orbiting laboratory by the end of the decade. Meanwhile, private companies are making significant steps in taking paying customers further into space. As humanity’s footprint expands beyond the familiar terrains of Earth to the Moon and possibly beyond, an intriguing new field emerges from the final frontier: astroforensics. This discipline, still in its infancy, is propelled by the inevitability of human nature. Space presents a unique and harsh environment for forensic investigations. Settings that present altered gravity, cosmic radiation, extremes in temperature, and the need…

Ukraine’s drone startups aim to turn war experience into peacetime business

Juggling two jobs is hard work. It’s particularly hard work when one of the jobs is in a warzone. But for Ivan Kaunov, the roles are complementary. As the CEO and co-founder of Buntar Aerospace, Kaunov develops drones for long-range flights. As a member of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, he flies drones on combat missions. “We’re using them on the battlefield and we know what works, what doesn’t, and how they should be changed to fit the modern warfare reality.” the 33-year-old tells TNW on a video call from a classified military facility. “We have the fastest feedback loop ever.” …

London-based Gocycle, founded by Richard Thorpe, a former industrial designer at McLaren, has released the first images of its new range of folding cargo ebikes.  Gocycle, best known for its sleek folding ebikes, first announced its move into the cargo bike market back in February, along with some shiny 3D renders of two models — the CXi and the more premium CX-plus.   “Right now all we have is a promise and a bunch of image renders, not even photographs of a real bike,” wrote The Verge at the time.  Well, for all the sceptics out there, these images confirm the…

Startup building ‘biowearables’ for chronic kidney disease nets €2.3M

Paris-based Metyos has raised €2.3mn in pre-seed funding to improve the lives and health outcomes of chronic kidney disease patients with its biowearable technology. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects 10% of the population and is the third fastest-growing cause of death worldwide. It’s also associated with a heavy financial impact on healthcare, with its treatment costing the EU €140bn per year. To fight the disease, Metyos has developed a biowearable sensor in the form of a patch, which provides real-time readings on biomarkers related to CKD. The readings are fed into the startup’s disease management platform, which doctors can use…

This AI model spots workplace accidents before they happen

In 2021, there were over 3000 fatal and 2.9 million non-fatal accidents in workplaces across the EU. Over a fifth of these, perhaps unsurprisingly, occurred within the construction sector. All of them, in theory, were preventable.  Stockholm-based startup Buddywise has built a set of computer vision models that scan a workplace and warn you of potentially dangerous situations. The AI platform sends out emergency alerts in the event of an injury or death. The company says it’s working towards a “zero-injury future”.    “Everybody should be able to return home unharmed after a day’s work, so we can’t accept the status…
