This cryptocurrency stealing malware was blocked more than 360,000 times over the past year

As long as cryptocurrency has value, people will try to steal it. According to the latest figures from cybersecurity firm Avast, a cryptocurrency stealing malware has been blocked more than 360,000 times by its software. The malware, named Clipsa, is described by Avast as a “multipurpose password stealer.” It exploits numerous attack vectors to steal or illicitly mine cryptocurrency. Avast says the malware can replace cryptocurrency addresses in an infected system’s clipboard to redirect funds away from their intended destination and toward wallets owned by hackers. More than just theft Several versions of Clipsa have also been recorded to deploy…

Dear Twitter, I thoroughly despise the new ’embed tweet’ UI

Despite all the flak it caught for its revamped look, I tried giving Twitter‘s new design a fair shake. The updated layout is supposedly faster, more intuitive, and easier to customize – and for the most part, it is. But as much as I wanted to dig the redesign, there’s one aspect that truly ruffles my feathers: the new tweet embed UI. It’s unnecessarily complicated, significantly less convenient to use, and, quite frankly, the antithesis of intuitive. For those unfamiliar with the embed UI, the feature is particularly useful if you want to include Twitter replies in a blog post,…

Sony’s AI drummer is so good you’d think it’s human

AI generating music is pretty commonplace now. Apps such as Mubert even let you play generative music on your phone. Now, Sony has just developed an AI that adds kick-drum beats to pre-existing songs, and make them more catchy. The AI adds “musically plausible” kick drum beats invariant to tempo and time-shift. The research team used 665 pop, rock, and hip-hop tracks to train the model where rhythm instruments including bass, kick and snare are available as separate 44.1kHz audio tracks. In the recently released research paper, the team said it lays out the track as a sequence of mapping code of kick…

Secretive ‘Machete’ hacker group steals GBs worth of sensitive files from the Venezuelan military

Researchers at cybersecurity firm ESET have unearthed a targeted cyber-espionage campaign that sets out to steal sensitive documents from Venezuela’s military forces “The attackers exfiltrate specialized file types used by geographic information systems (GIS) software,” said ESET researcher Matias Porolli. “The group is specifically interested in files that describe navigation routes and positioning using military grids.” About 75 percent of the malware infections – all operated by Machete – were located in Venezuela, with other victims spread out across Ecuador, Colombia, and Nicaragua. First documented by Kaspersky in 2014, the Machete group has been active at least since 2010, focusing…

Huawei owns itself with ballsy ‘who owns us’ Twitter poll

Aug06
by Sindy Cator on August 6, 2019 at 9:43 am
Posted In: Around the Web, Asia

Huawei‘s head of PR will probably have some explaining to do after today’s stunt (although I commend them for their bravery). The company put out a poll from its official Twitter account asking its followers who they thought owns Huawei — along with the incredibly catchy hashtag #WhoRunsHuawei. Who do you think owns Huawei? #WhoRunsHuawei — Huawei (@Huawei) August 2, 2019 After the intense media coverage of Trump blacklisting Huawei earlier this year — and the following fallout — it shouldn’t come as a surprise tthat 42 percent of more than 56,000 respondents thought it was owned by the Chinese…
