Instagram and WhatsApp get a ‘from Facebook’ stamp to remind you who’s boss

To be honest, I’m kind of impressed Facebook held out this long. After buying WhatsApp and Instagram several years ago, Facebook has decided it’s time to let everyone know who’s in charge. A report from The Information details Facebook plans to change the names of the apps to ‘Instagram from Facebook‘ and ‘WhatsApp from Facebook.’ The social network later confirmed the report. I’m sure people with love that. This isn’t just something you’ll see on marketing materials, as Facebook  intends to change the name you see in the Google Play and the App Store as well. Mercifully, the ‘from Facebook’ text – which appears…

Where’s my “Edit Measure” option from the Values pane?

Why is it that I can do this from here…

…but it doesn’t let me do this from there?

When I want to edit a PowerPivot measure, I generally want to edit a measure I’m *already* using.  I don’t want to scroll through a whole bunch of tables in the fields list or the Manage Measures dialog trying to find it. I just want to right-click on that Measure right there, that’s staring back at me from the PivotTable Fields Values Pane.

Yes, I’ve added an idea on UserVoice for this. It languishes somewhat behind Ken Puls’ great idea to radically improve the layout of this part of the PivotTable Fields List.  Which languishes in turn behind Zac Barresse’s no-brainer suggestion that Microsoft allow users to use Tables that are on otherwise-protected sheets.

Honestly, I think the Excel UserVoice site is the Microsoft equivalent of this ‘nifty’ feature in my other most widely used application:

I did tweet this from my new social media experiment@InsightsMachine but I think all 8 of my followers are my mother. If you have followers that aren’t your mother, please retweet this.

Here’s how researchers are making machine learning more efficient and affordable for everyone

The research and development of neural networks is flourishing thanks to recent advancements in computational power, the discovery of new algorithms, and an increase in labelled data. Before the current explosion of activity in the space, the practical applications of neural networks were limited.  Much of the recent research has allowed for broad application, the heavy computational requirements for machine learning models still restrain it from truly entering the mainstream. Now, emerging algorithms are on the cusp of pushing neural networks into more conventional applications through exponentially increased efficiency. Neural networks are a prominent focal point in the current state of computer science research.…

Researchers want to build a space station to recycle junk in Earth’s orbit

Aug04
by Sindy Cator on August 4, 2019 at 5:00 pm
Posted In: Around the Web, Space, syndication

There are about 22,000 large objects orbiting the Earth, including working and broken satellites and bits of old rocket from past space expeditions. If you include all the equipment dropped by astronauts while floating in space and the debris from colliding satellites down to around 1cm in size, there are about one million bits of space junk in Earth’s orbit. These numbers are likely to be underestimates. With more satellites and rockets launching each year, collisions with space junk are becoming more likely. Losing a satellite could mean your TV reception is poor or the weather forecast is a bit…

Drowning? Here are the best to-do apps to sort your life out

Welcome to TNW Basics, a collection of tips, guides, and advice on how to easily get the most out of your gadgets, apps, and other stuff. In this day and age, we’ve been blessed with several tools that allow us to create simple to-do lists to help us keep our lives on track. I appreciate that keeping track of tasks and duties is an intensely personal thing, and most people (myself included) will immediately reject any app or service that doesn’t quite feel right – basically, finding a good to-do app is as difficult as finding a good hairdresser, but fear…
