‘Full-time #crypto trader’ gets 20 months in prison for selling stolen data for Bitcoin

A UK man has been sentenced to 20 months in prison and fined more than £400,000 ($486,000) for selling stolen personal data on the dark web for Bitcoin. Authorities caught Elliot Gunton (19), who pleaded guilty, after they discovered a laptop containing software with cybercrime functionality during a routine visit related to a Sexual Prevention Order imposed in 2016. Further inspections found Gunton had been selling compromised personal data on the dark web to be used for criminal purposes. A press release describes scenarios “such as passing on mobile phone numbers which allows third parties to intercept calls and texts to commit…

Implanting AI chips in your mind could cause you to lose yourself, says scientist

Last month, Elon Musk’s Neuralink, a neurotechnology company, revealed its plans to develop brain-reading technology over the next few years. One of the goals for Musk’s firm is to eventually implant microchip-devices into the brains of paralyzed people, allowing them to control smartphones and computers.  Although this Black Mirror-esque technology could hold potentially life-changing powers for those living with disabilities, according to Cognitive Psychologist Susan Schneider, it’s not such a great idea, and I can’t help but feel relieved, I’m with Schneider on this.  Musk, who’s also the Chief Executive of both Tesla and SpaceX, aims to make implanting AI in the…

PaMu’s Slide wireless earphones (mostly) live up to the hype

Aug16
by Sindy Cator on August 16, 2019 at 1:45 pm

I don’t know about you, but I’ve been bombarded by ads and social media posts about the PaMu Slide wireless earphones crowdfunding campaign over the past month. It’s raised 260x its funding target, and has a bunch of NBA players endorsing it – so it must be great, right? Those are the sort of things that make me even more wary about a crowdfunded gadget. But I’m happy to report that the Slide is actually a pretty solid effort, and has a few neat features that make it worth considering over other popular options. These earbuds come from a company…

Critical KNOB exploit penetrates gaping Bluetooth vulnerability

Aug16
by Sindy Cator on August 16, 2019 at 1:19 pm
Posted In: Around the Web

Researchers have discovered a vulnerability in Bluetooth’s authentication protocols which, if properly executed, could allow an attacker to conduct a man-in-the-middle attack between two paired devices. This could see an adversary intercept and alter files while they’re in transit, as well as potentially listening in on conversations conducted via Bluetooth. Researchers from Oxford University, the Singapore University of Technology and Design, and CISPA Helmholtz Center for Information Security discovered the attack, which has since been dubbed KNOB, which is short for “Key Negotiation of Bluetooth.” (You, in the back. Stop laughing. This is serious.) The thrust of the KNOB attack…

CHEAP: No dongle, no problem. Samsung’s Gear IconX wireless earbuds are $70 (64% off)

Aug16
by Sindy Cator on August 16, 2019 at 1:04 pm
Posted In: Around the Web, Plugged

Welcome to CHEAP, our series about things that are good, but most of all, cheap. CHEAP! I’ve got a confession to make. I used to be one of those chumps hating on headphone jack-less phones, blaming manufacturers for forcing consumers into buying numerous useless dongles – or spewing extra cash for expensive wireless earbuds. That was a hill I was willing to die on. But not anymore. After spending several months with Huawei’s P30 Pro and Anker’s Soundcore Liberty Lites, I’m not ashamed to admit I was wrong. I’m a full-blown wireless earbuds convert now. And with 64 percent off Samsung’s…
