Microsoft is listening to you via your Xbox One

If you haven’t had enough stories about contractors listening in on your conversations, good news: we’ve found even more of them. This time the contractors in question work for Microsoft and have been listening to you through your trusty Xbox One. The new report from Motherboard reveals that contractors listened to commands that were supposed to be triggered by the words “Xbox” and “Hey Cortana,” but were sometimes captured by accident. That seems to be a running theme whenever I hear these stories about voice-activated assistants. Earlier this month, Microsoft admitted humans were listening into Skype calls and Cortana commands, and…

This Sony patent could mean the PlayStation 5 will actually be the PlayStation V

Sony Interactive Entertainment reportedly filed a recent patent for what appears to be a new gaming console, complete with drawings indicating it will have a radical design featuring a V-shaped indent on top. The ‘leak’ comes to us from Let’s Go Digital, and the documents appear to be real. But don’t get too excited: this is almost certainly not going to be the final look of the actual PlayStation 5 console. Chances are, this is one of the concepts for the PlayStation 5 developer’s kit. Dev kits are usually bulkier and have more ports than the finished product because, at this stage,…

Scientists at an aquarium just figured out how to save Florida’s ‘Great Barrier Reef’

Scientists in Florida may have just saved the the third largest coral reef on the planet. Florida Aquarium Senior Coral Scientist Keri O’Neil, aka “The Coral Whisperer,” and her team of researchers today announced they’d successfully spawned Atlantic coral in a laboratory – the first time this has been accomplished. The implications for their work will almost certainly save “America’s Barrier Reef,” and will probably have a huge impact on efforts to resuscitate coral populations around the world. Not bad for a group of people who’ve spent the last few years teaching sex ed. Coral colonies throughout the world’s oceans…

The Club, an ‘MMO’ from one of the Stanley Parable devs, is bonkers

Sometimes I come into work and my European colleagues have had a relatively quiet day. Other days I come in and someone tells me they’ve spotted something so bizarre, so wonderful that I immediately think, “I gotta check this shit out.” In this case, it was my boss telling me he’d just found out that the developers of The Stanley Parable had made a 90s-esque browser MMO set in a dance club. I’m sorry… what? It’s simply titled The Club. If you’d told me this time yesterday that I’d be checking out a game like this, I’d have told you to lay off the…

Ignore these 3 cybersecurity risks at your own peril

Aug21
by Sindy Cator on August 21, 2019 at 5:18 pm
Posted In: Around the Web, Podium

Cybersecurity is often described as a 360-degree threat. That term refers to the fact that cyberattacks can come from any direction, in hundreds of different forms — many of them unfamiliar and unexpected. At this point, it’s unrealistic to expect 360-degree protection. The cybersecurity landscape changes so quickly as hackers adapt new techniques. Last year Cisco’s annual cybersecurity report went so far as to describe adversaries striking an organization as inevitable and recommended ways to reduce rather than eliminate risks. That’s because businesses suffering security breaches are becoming a commonplace occurrence, and while you cannot omit all cyberthreats, you can…
