The OnePlus 7 Pro 5G finally lands in the US via Sprint

OnePlus first released a 5G variant of the fantastic OnePlus 7 Pro months ago, but it was only available in the UK. Now the device, one of the first 5G phones at all, has arrived on Sprint. The device is available today in a handful of Sprint stores and will be available online tomorrow, August 28. It’s unsurprisingly OnePlus‘ most expensive phone, coming in at $840, compared to a starting price of $669 for the regular OnePlus 7 Pro. But that price needs context; it’s the cheapest 5G flagship yet. The LG V50 5G, for example, costs $999, while the…

It’s that time of year again: Microsoft has new Surface devices to announce. The company today sent out invites for its next big event, taking place in New York on October 2. An image of a Windows logo being etched onto metal makes it pretty clear the company is planning to announce new Surface hardware – perhaps even that mythical dual-screen Surface. The timing makes sense, anyway. The Surface Book 2 is now nearly 2 years old, so its due for an update, especially considering some of the notable improvements that have been made with Intel and Nvidia‘s latest-generation chips.…

Yelp now lets you personalize its app based on lifestyle and diet

Yelp is rolling out new options for personalization today, meaning you’ll tell the app about your dietary and lifestyle preferences, and it’ll spit back appropriately-tailored search results — in theory, anyway. If you log into Yelp today, you might find that you have the option to add “preferences.” These include several categories on foods you like, what kind of life you live (parent, pet owner), and what you like to do. Now when you search for something on Yelp, you’ll get results based on your stated preferences without having to filter them out yourself. The most helpful and potentially useful…

How Mozilla is crowdsourcing speech to diversify voice recognition

Aug27
by Sindy Cator on August 27, 2019 at 12:30 pm
Posted In: Around the Web, artificial intelligence

The immediate future of human-machine interaction lies in voice control, what with smart speakers, home appliances, and phones listening for commands to do our bidding. But voice assistants like Amazon’s Alexa and Apple’s Siri represent their overwhelmingly white, male developers leading to gender and racial bias. For example, if you have an accent, or your native language is something other than English, chances are you won’t get what you’re asking for. To solve this, Mozilla, a free software community, created “Common Voice” in 2017, a tool that crowdsources voices as a dataset to diversify AI and represent the global population,…
