YouTube purges 17,000 hate speech channels after policy change

YouTube this week issued an update on its efforts to remove hate speech from its platform — and it would appear it’s managed to make some headway. It claims to have removed over 100,000 videos and 17,000 channels specifically over hate speech, which is both good and kind of terrifying when you think about it. The hate speech policies changed earlier this year, with YouTube “specifically prohibiting videos alleging that a group is superior in order to justify discrimination, segregation or exclusion based on qualities like age, gender, race, caste, religion, sexual orientation or veteran status.” It also added it’d…

Here’s what the actual research says about the dangers of cannabis use

A research team parsed 68 current cannabis studies last year on behalf of the Canadian government. The goal was to determine what dangers citizens would face once the drug was legalized. What they learned was science doesn’t know much about cannabis. Fiona Clement, a health-policy researcher at the University of Calgary’s Cummings School of Medicine, led the group in its study of studies on the subject of human cannabis consumption. Their job wasn’t to determine whether the studies were right, wrong, or conducted properly, it was to get the data from the papers and present it to the government as aggregated findings. A…

Brave browser catches Google tracking users with hidden web pages

Brave, the budding privacy-focused browser with its own native cryptocurrency, has alleged that Google is using hidden web pages to feed personal data of its users to advertisers, reports Financial Times. The evidence, now in the hands of the Irish data regulator, reportedly accuses the Big G of allowing users (and their browsing habits) to be profiled, resulting in targeted advertisements. It’s claimed that these actions circumvent EU privacy regulations that demand user consent, as well as transparency from tech giants like Google. Remember: Google is Brave’s number one competitor According to Financial Times, Brave‘s chief policy officer Johnny Ryan discovered Google‘s…

Nasty Glupteba malware uses Bitcoin blockchain to keep itself alive

Cybersecurity researchers have discovered a new strain of the nefarious Glupteba malware that uses the Bitcoin blockchain to ensure it remains dangerous. TrendMicro’s latest blog details the previously undocumented variant, capable of invading systems to mine Monero cryptocurrency and steal sensitive browser data like passwords and cookies. Analysts confirmed this version of Glupteba also exploits an already-discovered security vulnerability in MicroTik routers to transform the target machine into a SOCKS proxy to initiate widespread spam attacks that could threaten Instagram users. Attackers transfer Bitcoin with Electrum to keep Glupteba online Infection typically works like this: a target machine is first…
