5G and connected living take centre stage at IFA

While waiting in line for the Huawei keynote at IFA 2019 in Berlin, there was an image of Albert Einstein and the misquote, “If the fact’s don’t fit the theory, change the facts.” Could this be a gentle dig at Ivanka Trump? The president’s daughter was famously mocked a few years ago for changing the facts herself. “Radio” by Rammstein was then played to an eager room of techies. Before introducing Huawei, CEO Richard Yu, the IFA Director Jens Heithecken, reminded the audience that IFA was born as a fair for broadcasting radios. Looking back, it’s easy to see how the struggle…

China is following Facebook’s playbook to issue a centralized digital currency

China‘s upcoming state-controlled digital currency is to be similar to Facebook‘s proposed coin, which makes total sense, because Libra isn’t really a cryptocurrency. Mu Changchun, deputy director of payments at China‘s central bank, explained the country was issuing its digital currency “to protect our monetary sovereignty and legal currency status,” Reuters reports. “We need to plan ahead for a rainy day,” Mu added. It’s likely these concerns reflect those of the European Central Bank. Earlier this week, a representative claimed that Facebook‘s Libra could undermine its power if it was readily adopted, as it could reduce overall demand for the Euro.…

Over half a million active GPS trackers have ‘123456’ as default password

Researchers have found serious security vulnerabilities in over 600,000 GPS trackers available for sale on Amazon and other online retail merchants that may have exposed user data, including the exact real-time GPS coordinates. Czech cybersecurity firm Avast, which disclosed the vulnerabilities, said it informed the manufacturer about the flaws on June 24, 2019, but added they never got a response to their repeated messages. The trackers — 31 models in all that are made by Chinese IoT manufacturer Shenzhen i365 Tech — allowed users to keep tabs on their childrens’ whereabouts through a companion app and a web portal, while…

Amazon is reportedly launching a food delivery service in India to rival Zomato and Swiggy

After establishing a strong base with its ecommerce and streaming content business in India, Amazon is reportedly set to unveil its food delivery service in the country next month. According to a report by Mint, the company will start the service under its Prime Now banner first in Bengaluru, and then in Mumbai and New Delhi. The report notes that Amazon will charge only fourth of the commission from the restaurant as compared to other food delivery competitors such as Zomato and Swiggy. The ecommerce giant is already signing up restaurants at a rate of five to six percent commission, as compared to…

Huawei’s Freebuds 3 pack active noise cancellation and a fancy new audio chip

Huawei today announced the latest update to its truly wireless earbuds game. The Huawei Freebuds 3 are the company’s latest salvo in an already crowded marketplace. It hopes to distinguish itself from its rivals with reduced call latency, as well as improved charging performance, and the introduction of active noise cancellation (ANC). The ANC aspect is arguably the most interesting. Huawei says the Freebuds 3 can remove around 15 decibels of external noise. While that doesn’t sound like much, bear in mind that these aren’t over-ear or in-ear headphones, and therefore can’t rely on the sound isolation effects garnered by…
