Facebook now asks for consent to scan your photos (but only on new accounts)

Facebook today announced it’d be rolling out its facial recognition settings to everyone — and that and that it’d be turned off by default for new users. Anyone who doesn’t already have this setting will be able to notified and asked if they want to turn it on. The new Face Recognition setting will replace Tag Suggestions, which ostensibly notified you if someone uploaded a photo of you (or who Facebook presumed was you) and offered to automatically tag you in it. The feature was first introduced in 2017, but not everyone got it at the time. Now Facebook is switching…

Android 10 is out on Pixel phones and more – here’s how to get it

Sep03

Android 10 has finally landed, despite my reservations that it’s not named after a dessert. After several betas introducing everything from new gestures (again) to chat bubbles to a more pervasive dark theme, Google‘s latest OS update is rolling out to Pixel devices and a few others right now. Though rollouts are typically gradual, you can get it right now by going to Settings > System > Advanced > System Update on your Pixel device. If it doesn’t show up, a refresh should do the trick. If you still don’t see it and are desperate for the latest software, you can…

Pirated textbooks & essays are full of malware

It’s not easy being a student nowadays. Sure, your parents could cover tuition with a summer job, but things are different now. Modern-day university students contend with high fees, overpriced rents, and yes, sky-high textbook charges. You can’t pirate a degree or a dormroom, but you can naughtily download that textbook your lecturer recommended. (You know, the one that you can’t find in the library. The one that coincidentally was written by your professor and costs $70. The one that was used during one lesson for about ten minutes, and then quickly dumped on a shelf where it was forgotten? The…

Elon Musk seemed unhinged ‘debating’ AI with Jack Ma

Sep03
by Sindy Cator on September 3, 2019 at 7:53 pm
Posted In: Around the Web, artificial intelligence

Tech moguls Elon Musk and Jack Ma took the stage last week at the 2019 World Artificial Intelligence Conference in China to talk about AI. What ensued was exactly what you’d expect from two of the most celebrated figures in tech: a strange, awkward, passive-aggressive bicker. The 45-minute conversation was billed as a debate, but in reality it was a series of meandering TED-esque talks by Musk on how, like, Earth is totally doomed in, like, millions of years or something. Ma, a guy who once played an unbeatable martial arts master in a movie with Jet Li, was having none…
