Quotable

"U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said publicly that the United States would not intervene in Syria, because the American Congress views second generation Syrian dictator Bashar Assad as a reformer. Is that because his live ammunition is reformed, or because his state sponsorship of terrorism and repressive abuse of human rights and free speech are so humanitarian?" ~ Yasha Harari

GameClub, the subscription service that revives long-forgotten iOS games, launched this week. Now, for the same price as an Apple Arcade subscription, you can access some of the classic games of iPhones past. Older games frequently perished in the extinction level events also known as “iOS updates.” Others ceased to be profitable enough for their original developers to justify supporting them. In any case, lots of previously well-known, well-regarded games vanished since the App Store first started hosting games in 2008. GameClub’s purpose is to bring those games back, by MacGuyvering the original source code of these sometimes-ancient titles to…

Disruptive ad behavior ESET found at least 42 Android apps that were available on the Google Play store, which contained a new strain of adware called Ashas. The apps, installed more than eight million times since they first debuted in July 2018, have been traced back to a Vietnamese university student in Hanoi. Once installed, the app didn’t…

Google accused of creating ‘surveillance tool’ to monitor employees’ unionizing efforts

Google employees have accused the internet giant of creating an “internal surveillance tool” to monitor gatherings of more than 100 people with an intent to crush their attempts to organize protests. Per Bloomberg, which cited an memo from an anonymous Google staffer, employees discovered that the company was creating the new tool as a Chrome browser extension that would be installed on all employees’ systems and used to monitor their activities. The extension would then report to senior staff any calendar event with more than 10 rooms or 100 participants, implying that “this is an attempt of leadership to immediately…
