Report: The PS5 is so expensive to make, Sony may sell it at a loss

The new PlayStation appears to be giving Sony one heckuva headache, with components now allegedly forcing the price of the console up. Waiting on Microsoft to set a price on its own console isn’t helping, either. According to a report from Bloomberg, the PS5’s current unit cost is up to around $450, which would push the retail price of the console almost $100 more than its predecessor. The company is struggling to obtain enough DRAM and flash memory, already in high demand from smartphone manufacturers. The console‘s cooling system is also reportedly more expensive than is typical for the machines.…

Uber test lets you dial a phone number for a ride – no app required

Uber is rolling out an experimental feature that offers the radical option to call for a car the old-fashioned way, using a 1-800 number and interacting with a human. So far the company is testing the option only in one state, but I very much hope this feature will make to the rest of the world, because there are probably a lot of people who need this. How it works is that prospective passengers call the number, tell the human operator on the other end where they’d like to go, and provide payment details if there are none already on…

Telcom companies are using Facebook fake news against each other

Feb12

Facebook today revealed it’d identified and removed several new fake news sources on its platform and Instagram. Some of the latest apparently include Southeast Asian telcom companies — whose goal is apparently to discredit their rivals, making it a rare case of disinformation used for commercial purposes rather than nationalistic ones. According to a statement from Nathaniel Gleicher, Facebook’s Head of Security Policy the fake news pages were linked to state-owned telcoms companies, namely Myanmar’s Mytel and Vietnam’s Viettel. In total, Facebook removed 13 accounts and 10 pages that violated its rules. The pages used memes and “news” about other companies to…
