OpenAI’s flagging techno-utopianianism exposes tensions between business and public benefits

OpenAI‘s efforts to build an AGI that benefits humanity have earned plenty of plaudits and press coverage, but they’ve also further exposed the limits of techno-utopianism. MIT Technology Review’s Karen Hao published a piece on the lab this week that depicts a company buckling under the weight of its grand ambition. Over three days at OpenAI‘s office, Hao discovered “a misalignment between what the company publicly espouses and how it operates behind closed doors”. Changes at OpenAI OpenAI was founded in 2015 as a non-profit, but last year it restructured as a “capped profit” company. The lab claimed that this would…

So when French audio giant Focal invited to see how its speakers were made last year, I knew to expect the fancy machinery, anechoic chambers, and assembly lines. What I didn’t expect was how much of a human…

New research suggests stars don’t collapse — they explode!!!

Feb16

Posted In: Space, syndication

By conducting experimental research with matter 10 million times denser and 25 times denser than that found at the centre of the sun, researchers have determined the nature of the nuclear processes that occur within intermediate-mass stars. Our understanding of the deaths of both low and high mass stars are fairly sound, but the team’s findings could change how we think about the fate of stars that lie in between. They suggest that such stars may not collapse, as previously believed, but instead end their lives in a spectacular explosion. How a star evolves is very much dictated by its…
