Who really has time for household chores? Not only are they unenjoyable, but you’re often left fighting with unwieldy appliances, like massive and finicky vacuum cleaners, that make the irritating task of cleaning all the worse. Domestic vacuum cleaners have had a strange trajectory. When they were first launched, they went through an amazing transformation that consistently improved their practicality and efficiency. That being said, since the digital revolution, not much has actually changed in the way of design and functionality — at least not until robotic vacuum cleaners came on the scene. The invention of fully autonomous robotic vacuum…

The first vehicle from “self-driving car” from Zoox, the autonomous vehicle company that Amazon purchased for $1.2 billion earlier this year, has been spotted ahead of its official December 14 reveal. Images first shared on Reddit and then on Twitter show the push-me-pull-you vehicle outside the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco. By the looks of things, it was being filmed ahead of its official reveal later this month. @zoox going all in filming at the @FairmontSF today. Looks like 2021 to me! Exciting future ahead of us! #selfdrivingcars #innovation pic.twitter.com/8XjS4qPOcV — Christian Claus (@Christian1Claus) December 6, 2020 Zoox, perhaps one…

Recap: Who’s responsible if a self-driving car has an accident?

With self-driving cars gaining traction in today’s automobile landscape, the issue of legal liability in the case of an accident has become more relevant. Research in human-vehicle interaction has shown time and again that even systems designed to automate driving — like adaptive cruise control, which maintains the vehicle at a certain speed and distance from the car ahead — are far from being error-proof. Recent evidence points to drivers’ limited understanding of what these systems can and cannot do (also known as mental models) as a contributing factor to system misuse. In the video above, a webinar on the…

Nobody knows why there’s ghostly blobs in the sky — astronomers are excited

In September 2019, my colleague Anna Kapinska gave a presentation showing interesting objects she’d found while browsing our new radio astronomical data. She had started noticing very weird shapes she couldn’t fit easily to any known type of object. Among them, labeled by Anna as WTF?, was a picture of a ghostly circle of radio emission, hanging out in space like a cosmic smoke-ring. None of us had ever seen anything like it before, and we had no idea what it was. A few days later, our colleague Emil Lenc found a second one, even more spooky than Anna’s. Anna…
