HackerRank today published its 2018 Tech Recruiting Report. The paper examines trends and perspectives in the competitive developer recruitment market, and has identified several trends that are guaranteed to raise eyebrows. One trend spotted by HackerRank is that there seems to be endemic relationship issues between recruiters and hiring managers. HackerRank asked how they perceived their relationship with the other party. While 30.5 percent of recruiters said it was “excellent,” only 17.1 percent of hiring managers said the same. That’s a chasm of nearly 13 percentage points. That’s perhaps because both parties have different overall goals. Recruiters are primarily concerned…

YubiKey’s new iOS SDK lets developers bring hardware 2FA to their apps

Yubico, the maker of the popular YubiKey hardware two-factor authentication (2FA) token, has announced the launch of its iOS SDK. This allows developers to bake truly secure 2FA (read: not based on SMS) into their apps, based on the company’s YubiKey NEO NFC-equipped hardware. Support for the company’s NFC one-time-password hardware arrived in iOS 11, which Apple released last September. The launch of this SDK signals that the tech has matured, and is ready for the prime-time. Developers of apps — especially enterprise apps — that require an extra layer of secure authentication can use this to integrate YubiKey NEO…

Bitcoin has seen 44 forks since Bitcoin Cash and they are all useless

It isn’t just the initial coin offerings (ICOs) that are running rampant, it seems cryptocurrency forks are in close competition. Bitcoin alone has seen 44 forks of its blockchain since August last year, according to BitMEX Research. Bitcoin Cash, or BCash — launched on August 1, 2017 — was Bitcoin’s first hard fork that resulted in a blockchain split. The hard fork happened following the controversy over the integration of SegWit feature with Bitcoin’s blockchain. A host of forks have since followed — christened by adding any random word you can imagine next to Bitcoin: Candy, Pizza, God, Faith, Diamond, Gold,…

Just like Twitter, Gmail lets you ‘@’ mention people

May22

Gmail got a much-needed visual refresh and some clever new features recently, including Smart Compose and a snooze button for incoming messages. But did you know that the revamped interface also supports user mentions, à la Twitter? When you’re composing a new message or a reply, you can insert anyone’s email address in the body by entering the @ symbol, followed by their name. For example, @Abhimanyu will bring up a list of people in your contact list with that name, and choosing any of them will add a mailto link labeled with their name. When your recipient clicks that…
