India considers taxing cryptocurrencies instead of banning them

It appears that the government of India is not banning cryptocurrencies, instead contemplating taxing them. The government is considering a proposal to lay an 18-percent Goods and Services Tax (GST) on the trading of the cryptocurrencies, Bloomberg reports. The proposal is currently being evaluated by the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (the national agency responsible for GST), and will be presented to the GST council when the draft has been finalized. The government may levy the GST on cryptocurrency retrospectively from July 1, 2017 — when GST was implemented. Government’s choice of GST is particularly interesting. The tax…

Dashlane study: people are still terrible at making secure passwords

May23

One of the most basic things you can do to protect yourself online is to use strong, complex, and distinct passwords. But a recent study of 61 million leaked passwords from Virginia Tech and Dashlane proves we’re still failing to do this. Virginia Tech Computer Science academic Professor Gang Wang provided Dashlane with an anonymized sample of passwords. These were obtained as part of a research project at the university, which looks into password reuse and modification patterns. Dashlane researchers then found several common (and pervasive) bad habits. One common faux pas is called “password walking,” which is where you…

HTC’s notch-less U12+ gets 4 cameras and a squeezable body

May23

After leaks galore over the past several weeks, HTC has finally unveiled its flagship for 2018, the squeezable U12+. Armed with dual cameras in the front and back, the U12+ skips the tiresome trend of cutouts at the top of the 6-inch 2,880 x 1,440 pixel screen. As with its predecessor, the sides of the body are pressure-sensitive and respond to taps and squeezes for things like preventing screen rotation, zooming in and out, controlling audio playback, launching voice assistants, and bringing up the customizable Edge Launcher with its array of shortcuts to apps and settings. The rear dual-camera system…
