Design is the only thing holding mobile AR back

This year will be the year that we see the first applications designed for an AR-powered, mobile camera-first world. I’ve heard many discussions about how to accelerate AR development and adoption, but will everyone’s panacea be the cloud? While I believe cloud services will be essential to AR’s success and play a big role in its evolution, contrary to popular belief, cloud isn’t the gating factor. In my view the roadblocks to AR adoption are around design, reach and instructing people how to rely on what AR can do. Let’s take a step back and look at how interfaces have…

UX designers, stop the jargon and keep it simple

“On this screen, we have added a photo gallery. You can clearly see how it is inspired by Don Norman’s first level of visceral design, and how it utilizes some foundational Gestalt principles, helping achieve our graceful degradation strategy for pre-webkit browsers. It’s very gestural, intuitive, designed for millennials.” Or: “On this screen, we added a photo gallery. It anticipates what I’ll see in the next photo, and the fact it has rectangular edges makes it compatible with older browsers like Internet Explorer. Just by seeing a sneak peek of the next photo, I know I can swipe to browse…

Does Facebook know enough about us to play cupid?

When Facebook announced that it would be launching a dating app, shares in Match group (which owns Tinder), immediately plunged by 22 percent — later to recover after its positive profit announcement. Clearly, investors — as yet — are undecided on whether users are going to abandon the likes of Tinder, Bumble, Hinge, and Happn in favor of the world’s most used social media platform. Bumble has already suggested they’d be open to partnering up with Facebook, while Tinder has expressed pleasure at the announcement — arguing it will help to end online dating stigma. This perhaps suggests that they,…

Fast food is the best use case for technology

Today, I want to talk about air sausage. Earlier this week, our team was made aware that respected hot dog creator, Oscar Mayer, not only has a WienerFleet, but in order to celebrate summer’s start, is launching the Super Hotdogger, a JetPack-powered vehicle. It included “raw footage of Super Hotdogger flying over Southern California’s scenic water” — all in order to “get a better hot dog in every hand this summer.” Seeing footage of this raw-dogging filled me with delight. That being said, I really love fast food. I’d even call it a passion. What? You’re not as in love with…

Scientists in Ghana want to fight child pneumonia with beads

Jun23

Ghanaian scientists have designed beads to educate mothers to accurately monitor children’s respiratory rates and diagnose signs of pneumonia. According to the WHO, in 2015 pneumonia accounted for 16 percent of child deaths below the age of five, with Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia bearing the greatest burden of the disease among children. Children with pneumonia experience a range of symptoms such as fever, fast breathing, cough and sometimes difficulty breathing. The lead researcher, Daniel Ansong, says that the project seeks to evaluate the socio-cultural understanding of pneumonia and the level of confidence among women in counting respiratory rates and detecting signs of pneumonia. A multidisciplinary research…
