Chinese tech giant Tencent has announced it’s joined the Linux Foundation as a platinum member. Tencent is one of a few companies to offer the highest level of support to the Linux Foundation. Other tech companies in this stable include IBM, Microsoft, and Intel, as well as fellow Chinese titan Huawei. As part of the deal, Tencent will take a chair on the Foundation’s board of directors. It has also promised to offer “further support and resources” to the Foundation’s efforts. So far, this has taken the form of Tencent donating several pieces of its software. Already, it’s bequeathed TSeer,…

Social trading platform eToro has added yet another token to its growing list of cryptocurrency offerings: Cardano (ADA). “Cardano is the latest cryptocurrency to be added to eToro’s selections,” the company said in an announcement on its blog. “eToro clients can now trade and invest in ADA and add the [cryptocurrency] to their portfolios.” With this addition, the platform now supports 11 cryptocurrencies. Aside from Cardano, eToro also offers Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Bitcoin Cash (BCH), Ripple (XRP), Dash (DASH), Litecoin (LTC), Ethereum Classic (ETC), Stellar Lumens (XLM), NEO (NEO), and EOS (EOS). Why the future of share-worthy content is personal

We all have “that Facebook friend.” Several of them, most likely. The kind who religiously shares and comments on his own “On This Day” stories, tagging you in any that are related to you, of course. He also dutifully shares his “Friendiversary” and “Year in Review” videos, continuously proving the appeal of personalized content. Brands are getting increasingly smarter at leveraging people’s love for sharing memories on Facebook. I have a few friends who are active in the international running circuit, so in the days following the Boston Marathon this past spring, lots of video clips documenting the performances of…

Monzo is (finally!) rolling out international money transfers

Jun25

Posted In: Around the Web, Insider, UK

Monzo is one of the most popular challenger banks. That said, compared to some of its brick-and-mortar rivals, it’s missing a few important features. One feature at the top of Monzo user wishlists is international money transfers. While you can easily and quickly send money to other UK bank accounts via Faster Payments, if you need to pay a bill to an overseas account, you’re out of luck. Fortunately, Monzo has addressed this complaint with its latest update, which introduces international money transfers via TransferWise’s API. The feature is available on both the Android and iOS apps. Users can send…

Slack is quietly working on expiring statuses and better DMs

Jun25

Slack has finally addressed two of the biggest complaints with the app: statuses that never expire, and the relative clunkiness in composing new direct messages. The features were found hidden in the existing app by Jane Manchun Wong, a student and researcher based in Boston. Slack has long offered the ability for users to compose statuses, like “on vacation” or “in a meeting.” But users would have to manually delete these once no longer needed.
